Thanks to toolman for the link to Part 2

Spotted this on LAB... thought it might generate some discussion. The report seems to be pretty fair and balanced IMHO.

Good report Fish and I agree very fair, and unfortunate that these bikes temp some riders to want to hang corners at 100+mph, scrape pegs, and lower fairings on the same roads we vacation or site see with our families.

It upsets me kind of because at times we (riders) can get to confident in ourselves and think that we have complete control of these machines which are getting faster and faster.

My thoughts are, there organized tracks for just about every type of riding/racing. Takes personal restraint and a level of responsibility to be patient, wait, and pay to go to the track for road racing and drag racing. I hear of people street racing daily here in St. Louis, MO for big $$$. And those same people always have a story about someone whose on life support, dead, or without a limb. These same people refuse to go to the track to race where there's EMT and safer (supervised) conditions.

I'm done
Be Careful guys/gals and "ride within your limits". Or better yet ride within the laws limits.

I dont think there's anyone out there who hasnt broken a traffic law of some sort on their sportbike... I guess it all comes down to the simple fact that there's a time and a place for that sort of behavior. Ideally a racetrack. If not, then certainly away from the public on a deserted road and not in people's faces...

I like to ride fast, but I don't cross the dbl yellow. I don't pass hard, I don't meet cars at too high of speed. Looks like there is a few fucktards that need to learn what a track day is for.

...I try not to ride over the posted speed limit...I try not to cross over the double yellow...I don't know how to wheelie intentionally and keep it up there without scaring myself silly...I definitely don't know how to do a safe stoppie...I've never gone fast enough on public roadways to drag my kneepucks...all in all I just try to have a safe and fun ride without endangering myself or others...

...but sometimes shit just happens and oftentimes when you least expect it, sometimes beyond your control....and sometimes we do things intentionally while riding and adrenalin momentarily gives us hope for the best right before we do it, then we do it and live in the now without the thought of any consequences while we're doing it, then after that we are either glad that we got away with it with adrenalin still pumping...or wake up broken in the ER or hospital bed in a numb pain vaguely remembering what happened...its the nature of our motorcycle passion...yes?

...have fun, but let's be smart and careful out there...the life you save might be mine

Hey, I'm a physician - although not a trauma doc or ER doc (I'm an ob/gyn) - I have seen plenty of these accidents through training and the majority of these accidents are the young kids who have NEVER had any formal motorcycle training. I'm not one for government control as to who should ride a bike or not, but perhaps, everyone who buys a sportbike should pay for a motorcycle hands-on class and show proof of it prior to getting the bike registered. Now, should a 43 year old like me (with 3 kids, responsibilites, etc) be riding a ZX-14 - ABSOLUTELY - I never want to grow up.
Heck, I take a class every 3 years or so and I'm glad I do - it keeps me safe and accident free.
I've planted a motorcycle once (many years ago), on a turn in San Diego (I was only going 30 mph - so I walked away from it). Another time I have to admit I dropped my bike when I was stopped at a red light when a good lookin' woman pulled up besides me - that was around 1987/88 - there's more to the story - but it was pretty funny.

There is a guy at work that keeps asking to ride my 14, as if I'd say yes? I tried to be nice the first couple of times and politely say no, and he says he knows how to ride.

So yesterday he asked again, so I tell him why don't you bring your wife down to watch. He asks me why? I tell him so I can get to know her better and maybe take her out for a drink.

Now he is looking at me kind of funny. I look at him and ask him if he feels a little uncomfortable? He nods that he does. I look at him direct in the eyes and say... Good!

I think I won't have to hear that stupid question again. Save us both from pain I did:P

Like I would ever let anyone ride my toy(s) either - heck, I don't even let my wife drive my vette - she could careless about bikes (she doesn't have a license - which is actually too bad).

There was a study recently that showed proof that there is a mechanism in the adolescent mind that prevents them from thinking they are vincible. I don't generally care for government regulation, but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to limit them some, at least until they are 21. On the other hand, any motorcycle can be dangerous if not driven properly. The vast majority of street legal bikes do 100+ mph.

There's no excuse for not requiring a motorcycle safety class, however, with mandatory viewing of graphic emergency room photos. They should also be tighter monitoring of insurance for young motorcycle riders (under 25). Require them to show proof insurance at the DMV every 6 months or have the bike impounded.

I have a 19 yr old cousin that rides. He's not too crazy on his R6, but I gave him about 10 different scenarios where he could be killed through no fault of his own and he was just amazed. None of them had ever crossed his mind, but when I told him the light bulb turned on... at least for a little while.

If Fish_Antlers takes off and speeds past a car on the double yellow before a blind corner....whatever.
I am not going to do it just because he did it.
He will call back on the chatterbox and give me a hard time for being caught behind a car, way behind him, but I don't care.

I will speed past a car on the double yellow between corners, when I feel it is 'safe' to do so - not because someone is yelling at me on the radio to do it.

When you do 'stupid' things because you are comfortable with the level of risk then you may still be riding within your abilities - if you do stupid things just to keep up with the pack or a more experienced rider, then you are just riding stupid.

I like that: "Yeah you can ride it, if you let me take a ride on your wife/girfriend/daughter."

I'll let any of my friends ride my bikes and some others, if I've seen them ride. I get annoyed when people keep asking to drive my tank, shit, my wife hasn't even done that. The local Military Vehicle Club president wanted to have a fundraiser with people paying $5.00 to drive my tank over an old car. The fucking turd was serious! I asked him if he was going to pay for possible damage to the transmission and I informed him a new one should only run him about $120,000.00 . . . about twice what the tank is worth.

EDITED for fuckup.

I went out today and took the bike up to 130mph whoops broke the law. Dont get me wrong fellas I've rode hard on some straight highways. More so when I was younger 25 or so. I took off from riding on the streets for a year and a half just started back two weeks ago. I've raced my bike on the track solely the past two years. Had no desire to ride on the streets due to 3 fatal accidents of close friends and a relative.
