trickle charge question

I'm planning on rotating my battery charger between the 12 and the 14 this winter. Is 2amps too much charge for winter storage? 2 amp is the lowest setting on my charger. The reason i ask is because I was looking at the 'battery tender' and its less than 1 amp. Will a 2 amp charger hurt the battery over an extended period?

thanks for the advice
jeff

Once the battery reaches a full charge state, the battery tender has a circuit within it that senses whether it needs to comes on or not. You can leave it on as long as you want with no problem

He don't have a battery tender. He's using a regular battery charger.

I'd just buck up and buy a battery tender. You can get a gang charger ($$$) or just swap it between bikes like you plan on doing with your regular charger.

You don't want to use your charger. Buy a float charger designed to do more then battery then you can leave them hoked up without messing up the batteries. They are cheap compared to buying a battery let alone 2.

Jeff one tender and a couple sets of pig tails is all you need.. Move it every week or two and you'll be fine.

Battery Tender Jr is cheap. I just bought 2 for $25 each. I have 3 bikes in the garage (already had 1 Jr.) and it's really nice to not have to remember to switch it every few days.
The pigtails are really handy too compared to having to access the battery everytime you want to hook/unhook the charger. Every time I park any of the bikes, I just plug the Tender into the pigtail and forget it until the next ride.

thanks for the input, I AASumed that when I bought this one it would work fine. I'll be using the battery tender this winter. The charger I have now does kick down to standby when the battery reaches full charge. I'm guessing the smallest amperage possible is going to be the best way to go. The bat-tender is .75 amps.

thanks again
jeff

exactly what charger do you have......If it goes into standby...It may already have a float feature built in.
Float usually means that when the battery drops below a certain voltage, the charger senses it and pumps up the charge rate until that optimum voltage is reached again....then back to float....either no amps. low amps or off.

Yep, thats what mine does (it's a pretty good charger).

You throw it on two amps and when it hits green it stops charging. I just do that once every 3 weeks on a Saturday on both bikes and all is well.

It sounds like your other charger would work... as long as it truly does go into a standby state. If that's the case, you should see the word "automatic" somewhere on it. If it doesn't claim to be automatic, don't use it for long periods. The Tender Jr. is really the way to go though... those little things are wonderful!

I just have one tender and keep my 3 batteries (ZX12, ZX10 and Riding Mower) on my workbench in my basement. During the winter I will just go down and switch the tender to another battery every once and a while. No big deal. And Tenders are cheap nowadays.

Walmart has the black and decker 2amp float chargers (made by vector, part number vec080bd). It comes with the pig tails as well, and the lighter plug and alligator clips all have the same pigtail. Pretty nice set up for.... wait for it.......wait....... $17!

Just picked one up this evening, along with the Compaq laptop for $400 no rebates (ati video, cd burner, 512mb ram, 60gb, wireless, etc). Nice laptop for the students in the family as well as the PC3 software, all 3 walmarts in the area sold out today, was able to reserve one. (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5238476)

Amazon has the same battery charger for $30.
