I would think that staying in-between lanes at a light would only encourage cars behind you to pull up closer than they need to. I think it is important to have escape routes but wouldn't give up control of the lane.

CHP instructors recommend that you stop6-8 feet behind the car in front and lined up with the inside rear tire. That way if the world turns brown behind you it's simple to move into the slot as a defensive move. If you split becaue you MIGHT get rearended is not an acceptable excuse.

I got my story straight ... But officer this silly law don't apply to me as i got a note from my doctor excusing me . it states " Dear Law enforcement officer , if this patient is stopped for lane sharing please let him go asap without further ado because he thinks he'll die if he stands still too long and will go insane in short order !
If this is not possible then be sure and escort him back to my office where he can be properly treated, he'll lead the way ! signed Dr. Waki Ho phd.

We do it in NYC all the time. I prefer that the cars be stopped waiting for a light, but I and many others have been known to split at 20-30 mph. It is only enforced occasionally by the cops here...it IS against the law, but Ive only been stopped once in 15 years, didnt get a ticket...talked nice and explained that I need to survive on the street...the cop let me go with a "be careful out there".

Man, I couldn't imagine living in a state were it is illegal to lane split. Isn't that why they made the bike so thin? To fit in between the cars and trucks. Seems logical to me.
Also the reason I don't own a Harley (among others), I see Harley guys sitting in traffic most of the time as I go by unless they have a thinner style sportster.

Just remember to check with each city to get their rules!
Besides who's gonna chase you, a cop on a BMW???????
