Drag racing gearing?
Has anyone or should I say what gearing has been used ?
I've tried stk , -1 16T, and now +1 18T all with 41 stk rear sprocket.
18T lays down real bad almost makes the clutch slip like you are
driving thru the clutch, less mph, but real consistant ET's.
I still had an ok 60ft 1.78 leaving easy trying not to kill the clutch.
Now I'm thinking of trying a -2 15T, some have said 16/43 is eye opening.
Has anyone gone this far on the gearing foot shifting at the track?
I'm still stk wheelbase stk pipes with homemade TRE.
I've got one more chance to break into the 9's before
the end of the season at the end of this month,
hoping this will be the key to move my 60's down into the 1.5? range.
16/43= 2.6875
15/41= 2.7333
It should pull of the line like a tractor if I can just hit the 1-2 shift
Comments, ideas, warnings!

I am geared 16/42 and I think that is perfect for drag racing, I was at the top of 4th at the end of the quarter mile and it comes out of the hole real nice.

16/41 my best 60 ft. is 1.664 same as my buddy who is 60lbs. lighter than me.
I got thru the traps with the shift light glowing in top of 4th light set @ 10.5K
I was hoping to get into 5th for a decent amount of time. And 60 ft. a little better!

I dont like the ideal of running a 15t on the front,I have heard it's too small a loop for the chain and it might bind up....not saying that will happen but I would stick with the 16. My bike with it 7 inches out does 1.45 60's easy with my 235 pound ass on it. It's goes 1.42 with my 60 pound lighter cousin on it. I'm -1 +3 on mine...not sure what to tell you for stock length. Also your front sprocket is where you get your inital "hit", too much gear and your 60's suck...take alot out and you will blow the tire off. I had a friend that was 2 down on the front of his built 750 and he was blowing the tire off everytime until we found out he had that gear on there....we went up a tooth and that cured alot of his spinning problems. I would stick with your 16 and add a tooth to the back....for stock length.

Don't run a 15T. I've run 16/44. Not much difference in ET, mph or 60' time. The result is that I went through the traps in 5th instead of 4th. With 16/41 i hit the rev limiter in 4th exiting the traps. I have yet to try the 17/41 gearing with the bike setup the way it is. Might try it, as my best mph so far is only 145. Did you see my video?? That was launching at 5500, pinning the throttle almost immediately, and shifting at 11000. It didn't bog, didn't spin, and only lifted the front a little. And it was geared 16/41.

flatout- OK I understand your corcerns,
1st are you footshifting,
because your gearing is actually taller than what I'm proposeing
44/16= 2.750
41/15= 2.733
You are 7 out, with Pipe & PC= less traction, same weight, more power
I am same weight, stk WB, Bone stk= more down pressure, less Hp, less gearing
Do you have trouble blowing the tire away alot?
Right now I only have traction problems down track,
if the track hasn't been run in by some cars with big HP
I will make sure the sprocket is big enought to hold the chain off the swingarm
KZ/GS old school bikes run as small as 14T without binding, so that isn't my worry.
More that it will rub the arm, or I won't be able to make the 1-2 shift,
If I start to blow the tire away then I'm at the point of max acceleration for.
One more question, are you shifting @ 11K or lower, mine seems to nose over any higher?

Iflyphi-I watched real intense, noticed 5500 and it 's like you can almost just drop the clutch and gas.
(slight bog, then pulled out fine) You are 6 out, right?
Can you look closer at your version and tell me what the rpm drop is between gears is it more then 2000rpm?
I need to on bike tape some passes!

15 tooth forces the chain into a tighter radius, robbing power, and wearing out chain and sprokets,
..... even if stays off the swingarm, your better off going larger in the rear instead.
Stick with the 16 front, make changes to the rear to lower the final gearing.
Trust me!

Heres my 2 cents, I was stuck at low 10s for a while. I figured out i was trying 2 slip clutch, then get on the power when i thought i was out far enough 2 avoid wheelies. heres what worked for me. Leave at lower rpm, itl let you get clutch out, then pin it. Im no pro, so take it as you will. But went from 10s to 950s. 16\41

Thats what I noticed too,
better, more consistant results launching 3000-4000 rpm,
16/41 fly's out brocks smeg.
16/41on the street, You could fling the lever out and twist it at 2000 rpm and it'll hook and fuck off.
17/41 and it stumbles initially....wants to burp, then goes.
still thinking 16/43 may be spinning EVERY time you grab a handful in lower gears on the street.
16/41 spinns up occaisionally, scrubbs the tire continuosly.
My rear tire is chaffed, like a whiskey midnight rug burn on the knee's!

16/43 for me on the streets. I too launch at a lower ....maybe about 3K (I go by sound) and throttle up as I clutch out at the same time. I can feel the front come up and I let it rise about a foot and stay there until it drops and then hammer the gas. I feel 16/41 or 42 would be best for the track depending on how close to redline you are at the finish line. Those gears are good for the street too w/o getting too buzzy on the highway.

I know this isn't what was being asked but going the other way to 18/41, which I fitted for top-speed events, it's actually quite good on the street. I wouldn't use it for drag as I'm sure 16/41 or stock is better but the higher gearing is great on the road. It allows you to hang onto a gear for a bit longer, doesn't harm performance and makes cruising in 6th more relaxed.
edit: forgot to add, the speedo is more accurate too.

Halvefast...I like the 16/43 gearing alot, it works for guys our size. I run a shinko at anywhere from 10 to 16 psi. I don't have alot of traction problems on the track but on the street it just blows the tire off on roll-on's at 55 mph. I understand were talking about 2 bikes set up 2 different ways. I can't tell you my set-up is going to work any better for you. I never took the time to learn how to ride this bike stock. I give you stock length guys props, I didn't have the patients to do that. My average pass goes like this....1.45-1.47 60' the 8th goes bye in 5.92-5.99 and I do a 9.27-9.35 @147-148. My cousin is 60 pounds lighter, and he has traction problems with my set-up. But he runs 9.00-9.10 with 1.42-1.45 60's. If your our size I say gear it...if your smaller dont. I don't care about mph on my bike as long as it ET's.
Oh yea...no i have a airshifter...best thing I done to the bike. I also now have the fiberglass seat which has changed my launch and helped alot. I can't lean on the tank as much with the new seat ...but my butt doesnt slide back now and cause my weight to shift and it wheelies. Stock length you want to be laying on the tank as much as possible...so that wouldn't help you. I think i'm done for the year, we only have 2 races left and tonight it's supposed to rain. If i get a chance i will try and get a good pass recorded.

Not exactly on track here, but.......
I have read a few post here and there about breaking traction - esp at speed - and I have NEVER had that (except wet or on the painted lines) but get wheelies instead. I have the stock tire (2nd one now) and it always grips so damn good I never loose traction like that.......even full throttle at 50MPH only pulls the front up just like 3000RPM from a rest. Stock, 16/41 and 16/43......still no spining.........?
