Re-opening of a classic drag strip
For anyone interested. This Saturday, Oct. 7th, is the Re-opening of Kingdon Raceway. It was once a stop on the old NHRA tour in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. I believe it was the winter-nationals. It is located in Stockton, Ca. There is a good chance that Bid Daddy Don Garlits may be there as well as a car show and lots street rods and one of the local sport bike groups. The motorcycles wont be allowed to run that day (other than a few exhibition passes) due to insurance rules, but if enough support is shown than they will be allowed to run in the future. So, any of you within driving distance please come out and show your support and be part of a piece of history. Its not often that one of the old dragstips that closed many many years ago (28yrs to be exact) ever opens back up again. There will be dash plaques given out as well as commorative t-shirts and mugs etc sold. Many vendors and a great way to spend a day (hangin out with other speed freaks). Only $20 per vehicle entry fee (not per person but per vehicle). So even if you dont come out on the bike fill up the SUV and roll out for some fun this weekend. Gates open at 7am racing starts at 9am.

especially a classic, with Don Garlits appearance!
Nice change from current practices!!

Isn't Kingdon near, or part of an airport??? I thought I remembered an airport by that name down there. Do they have a new surface for the track??

Yes it is a small airport. Yes a large portion of it has been resurfaced a couple of years ago. I have made several passes down it over the past couple of weeks and its pretty nice. really long shut off area. Longer than Sacs. (thats why there were so many fast cars back in the day and a lot of records set there...no worries about gettin em shut down before the end of the track.) Big Daddy Don Garlits made his first passes with a blower on his top fuel rail there back in the day. NHRA was just out last week and recertified the track so it is an officially sanctioned NHRA track once again.
