1/2 flies?

Was laying in bed last night thinking about taking my flies out, but my ultimate delima is I really like the ride and feel of the 14, tamed. At times. And other times I love the above 7k feel of the flies opening.

I want the best of both worlds, which obviously isn't possible (completly), And thought of a possible compromise that is neither flies out or the TRE.

I am very mechanically inclined and would have no problems of doing this. Just wondering if anyone else has thought of doing it or better yet has done it.

Pull the flies out and make them smaller then re install. Or fab up some smaller ones, think either would work.

Also another consideration I have not seen on here yet for the flies out guys. The rod support they attach to restricts air flow as well. Pulling that out would also generate better air flow. Anyone that has an LS1 motor in a GM that has sawed off the oil return in the intake knows this same trick.

Just mainly looking for some input into possible insight or hurdles I may not be considering here.

pull those flies out get a pc3 and map it and you won't be sorry.
please don't start 4 pages of 1/2 flies experiment.

actually after posting this I did some other looking around on other sites. And there is a group of guys including brock that had a conversation back in July about making a device that would activate the secondaries at a user set rpm. While still keeping the neutral light and gear display correct.

So think someone will eventually come out with something like that. Will just pull them for now and can always put them back in. Just extra costs in dyno's/maps to resize them to get a middle of the road power effect.

my other concern is I live in AZ. There are a lot of open long roads. Currently I am only getting 135 miles to a tank, filling it up near 20%. So am guessing my range to be only 160 miles. With the flies out, exhaust, pcIII and whatever else I plan on doing that is only going to go down. I can think of a couple 130+ mile stretches I could see myself on this winter.

With flies out and exhaust, I am getting better gas mileage than before. The low end torque does it job and saves fuel more than you think.

The flies were nice at 1st but foreplay.... er no flies is much better ..IMHO

Pull 'em - no map needed. My dyno runs showed a much SMOOTHER curve w/o them. If you have good throttle control it will not matter that there is more low-end TQ.......hell - try some 16/43 gearing and you will see what twitchy throttle is :-)

And don't mess with that rod....unless you like dealing with a closed loop sensor setup.........I put it all back together..........sucked......rode with a code 62 for 2 weeks..........

All those mods will help your bike run more efficiently. You will probably get better mileage.
All that an exhaust system does is to reuce the backpressure and increase the scavenging. This results in more power, but the power comes from making the engine more efficient. The PC 3 with a good map should also help as the mfgs typically run too rich at the top end.
The new GSXR 1000 is going to have 3 map traction control. I hope Kawi is watching and will take a cue from them. Electronics has the potential to really help streetbike by letting you dial in the appropriate map for the conditions.
Imagine if you could simply click a button on the bars and have totally unrestricted power. Run in to a rainstorm? Click the button to smooth the power delivery and lessen the chance of wheel-spin.
The Moto GP riders do this now. They have special maps to smooth and restrict the power in the rain. And multiple maps at the flick of a switch during the race.

If you can't control the power of the bike with yer freakin hand then no switch/map/prgram is gonna help you anyway.

I've been suggesting drilling the flies since day-1... just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've "felt" the no flies feeling and it's too sensative for my tastes too.

Well then I guess Valentino Rossi, Nickey Haden, and Shinya Nakano just don't know how to ride. Maby you should give them lessons.

FTS -- the bikes those guys ride are even more responsive than a "flyless" 14...hate to disagree, but D is right. I've owned a few Busa's which are just like a flyless 14...and I learned how to manage them easily. FJR's are just as hard pulling and throttle sensitive as the flyless 14, or even more so...and I don't see that crowd bitching about too much power. Interestingly enough though, the new K7 Gixxer comes with a switch on the bars to change maps from normal to performance to wet...you get the best of all worlds!

How does your A/F ratio look below 7k rpm? You not worried about burning a hole through your piston?

My AF is fine.............PC...........will dyno again soon.

I have had a chance to get up personal with Rossi's 2005 GP bike. It is about 250HP and the 16KRPM is controlled with just a qtr throttle...........1/4!!!!!! It is unreal how responsive it is at over 10K with a qtr throttle. I was thinking of putting one on my bike, but I don't have that kind of touch.......maybe never will.

Don't muck around modifying the butterflies. Pull them out, remap the FI and use some throttle control.

THe illusion that the bike will throw you off with the flies out is BS. The bike rides very controlled, just has better response when you open it up. JUST REMOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not just clip the secondaries on top of the circle and and on the bottom...question is how much to cut then to make them perfect for all throttle inputs??
maybe just cutting the top half close to the bolts is the answer.. dang...

could be the bottom half that yields the best compromise.. what you guys think...hehe..

No scatch that.. drilling small holes is more precise... but how large and how many???!!... dang!!!...lol lol...this is funny stuff.. must be friday...

Just went from a TRE to pulling the flies today and I have one comment.....If you are looking for low end PULL THEM! The TRE is good, flies out is BETTER! Used Brock's maps, no problems though I will dyno tune it eventually.

It's powerful, smooth and a blast to ride now! If you want to cruise around and not hammer it, you can, it's smooth as silk down low as well.

I know everyone has said this before but just had to say it again, I was one of the guys that did not see a reason to pull them, I was wrong.

Why waste your time with 1/2 flies?
I'd say give the following a whirl:
1/2 flies
1/4 flies
1/8 flies
1/16 fies
