seriously? You've never been aquianted with the concept of accelerating away from a hazard instead of braking?

At the risk of PK denouncing my teaching abilities. I instructed my Girlfriend this very concept this past weekend. Doing all the down shifting and braking at once is very important if for whatever reason the braking move DIDN'T get you clear of the situation you always leave a hole to rocket into that has less chances of death as the outcome. The hole may well indeed have a crash attached to it as well, but it should be one that can be survived. Being smashed between two cars or cleaning out a ditch line is a no brainer. BUT if you're sitting there with the motor stalled or in some stupid high gear you won't even have that option if it's required, AND those ball bearing will be used so you can get your ass up to your lips and kiss it good bye

downshifting will also help you stop faster. notice engine breaking, well its stronger at higher rpm's than lower ones. also, when you are in mid to higher rpm's, to me it seems the rear tire grips better than when you have the clutch pulled in or in nuetral or in low rpm's. which in turn will help you stop with your binders applied (i really think this is true, someone should try it out and tell me what they think). also, like fish said, being in optimum power range will also give you the chance to accelerate if the the need were to arise.

Keep it simple. Stay away from cages. Keep a pocket around you. I've tried the good citizen thing over and over. It doesn't work. Go faster than everyone else and position yourself out of everyone's way.

admirable thoughts... however I think what is in question are the avoidance tactics employed, and the fact that there seems to be a difference in the way that people react to hazardous situations. I'm still surprised at how many people are unaware of the "accelerate away" method vs simple "brake to avoid"...

either that or they're just fishing...

Surprised are we? Dude, most people who ride bikes can't ride; sure they can glide, but they can't ride. They'll go down because they simply don't understand the concept and have never had to employ those tactics to stay alive, but when they get into trouble, they're fucked, because don't understand true panic braking and don't know how to use gears to get away. They simply don't get it because they've never been taught, or never needed to use those techniques to survive, until they get into trouble and by then, it's just too late. I see people doing unintentional endo's all the time, because they don't remember to let the inertia/momentum transfer before they lock the fronts. Just stupid shit like that...

Best of all - don't get into a hazardous situation.
If you do, you need 100% of your concentration to avoid the hazard.
Shifting down requires some % of attention and therefore takes away from ones ability to cope.
You can talk away all day long on the internet if you want.
Just don't bullshit yourself!
