Billy Lane, Choppers Inc.

Local bike builder Billy Lane killed a motorcyle rider over the weekend. He was passing traffic on A1A in Melbourne, FL. He was driving his pick up and hit the guy head on.

You would think a fellow rider would be more carefull than a regular driver.

I thought the story was a little ironic.

Be carefull out there.

"Chopper Builder Involved In Fatal Crash

Local motorcycle shop owner Billy Lane, who has appeared on the Discovery Channel's "Biker Build-Off" and "Monster Garage," was injured in a Labor Day traffic accident that left a motorcyclist dead, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The 9 p.m. crash involving the 36-year-old Lane, the owner of the Melbourne-based Choppers Inc. and a resident of Melbourne Beach, occurred on State Road A1A south of Melbourne Beach near the intersection of Ballyshannon Street

Florida Highway Patrol investigators said Lane was trying to pass two other vehicles on A1A when his southbound 2006 Dodge Ram pickup collided with a northbound 1983 Yamaha motorcycle, Florida Today reported The motorcyclist, identified as 56-year-old Melbourne Beach resident Gerald Morelock, was wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Lane hit the motorcycle head on, and then the pickup hit a power pole," said Kim Miller, spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol.

Miller said a passenger in the pickup, identified as 22-year-old Erin Derrick of Rockledge, was also injured in the crash. Lane and Derrick were transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne but their medical conditions were not immediately available Tuesday morning.

Lane, who was semi-conscious at the accident scene, is known for his work building custom-made motorcycles.

Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigators said no charges were filed, but added they were waiting on the results of blood-alcohol tests, which will be available in six to eight weeks.

Employees contacted at Lane's chopper shop this morning would not comment"

If you've watched his Biker Build Off series, he and his crew like to do the Traditional Harley guys around here anyway is go riding from bar to bar (tittie bar included) and he and Co. drank heavily all night and then jumped on the choppers and rode off again. Not a very good promotion for safe bike riding to most of todays "kids" that already think helmets and leathers are unnecessary. (except chaps) Don't get me wrong, I too like on occasional tittie bar or 2 and drink my share of beers, BUT not even in MY car or but NEVER on my bike. He makes sweet choppers if you're really into those (no hard tails for me thanks) but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the BAC test comes out with levels high enough for an OMVI/Vehicular homocide charges. For his sake I hope not.

The worst part it still won't help out "....The motorcyclist, identified as 56-year-old Melbourne Beach resident Gerald Morelock...."

so much for his career as a bike builder. i'd be surprised (and dissapointed) if he can dig up enough bikers willing to buy from him after this BS.

Passing on the A1A is tough in any case and depending on where, can be a very stupid move. If he's found to have had BAC over the legal limit and is judged to be guilty of vehicular homicide, then they have to put the guy away for a long, long time. Drinking and driving just don't mix and people who contravene laws like this need to be held fully accountable for their crimes, whether or not they were intentional at the time. There's just no excuse in the world that can justify drunk driving. When I ride with friends and I see drinks on the table, I stay away from them for the rest of the ride and advise my wife who rides with me, to do the same. It could be just 1 or 2 beers for all I care, but the reflexes are dulled and most people that I ride with don't know shit about recovering a bike in a close situation. Alcohol just isn't needed as parts of the day's activity as far as I'm concerned. It's bad enough that we have to constantly duke it out with the cagers out there...the last thing we need are impaired drivers or riders.

The preceding statement of course, is based on the fact that they find Lane guilty of all of this...however, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I wouldn't be surprised if he was under the influence, he tried to pass 2 vehicles in a truck on a tough roadway. Not a normal course of action in everyday driving, unless two vehicles were going well below the speed limit.

No matter what I'm driving / riding.
more than 1 beer every 2hrs, and the keys stay in my pocket.
Basically I'll have one just as a social gesture.

I've seen that Billy Lane guy on Biker Build-off and thought he was an egotistical asshole anyway.
What a freeking asshole.
Did the 56-year-old Melbourne Beach resident Gerald Morelock have any family? Billy should spend the rest of his life dedicated to them.
Everytime I saw him on the tube he was an asshole thinking he was the best bike builder in the world and coolest guy around, what an ass.

Im sure they are testing for more than alcohol....and drug tests often take longer to get results back since they are sent out to outside labs most of time.
