Great Drivers!

Went to the Sonoma raceway yesterday for the running of the Indy cars and got a chance to meet Mario and Marco Andretti.

Here Marco is after winning his first race and he's only 19! Here he is, standing about 5'8", 145 pounds. His car weighs about 1,600 lbs. and carries about 700 hp. That gives it a relationship of about 2.29 lbs per horsepower. Our bikes are running about 2.8 lbs/hp. Interesting...

And she only weighs about 95 pounds. She kept complaining that her car was too slow.

Nice Pics! One of my favorite quotes by Mario: "If everythings under control, you're going too slow."

Apparently Honda is the only engine the guys will run now. Ford and everyone else's engines were just too slow and unreliable.

Danica just signed with the Andretti team for next season so she knows she'll get a faster car which makes her very happy.

While watching the race I just kept envisioning a 14 runnings amongst the cars and how it would do. The acceleration is about the same but I think the cars are much quicker in the turns and have better brakes.

Another thing I found interesting was how the trailers were designed and how they carried their cars from track to track. Here is a shot of the rear elevator which lifts the car up and stores it into that tiny opening at the top of the trailer. First the fairings are removed and then two cars are rolled in one after the other. The clearance must be inches.

Here you can see (poorly, I might add) the two levels of the Andretti trailer with one of their backup cars right above their heads.
