Land Speed Set-Up

Hello all. I am a new member to the forum, although I have been reading it for awhile. I purchased a 14 in June to set up for Land Speed Racing - at Maxton and hopefully Bonneville in 07. I am trying to make the September meet at Maxton if all works out as planned. May need a few pointers from OldKaw if he is up for it.

I have been practicing on the strip - trying to master riding this bike - and to test set-up work. I have drag raced a VRod the last four years - so this is quite a departure in riding styles. I have the bike lowered 1.25 rear and 7/8 forks, plus currently strapped on the strip. MSD shift light, PC, handlebar mounted quickshift and Brocks SMeg pipes. Current gearing is 17-39 which will be changed soon to 18-40 for Maxton.

I have been extremely impressed with the Brock set-up and his personal support. I estimate that I netted 11 to 12% gain based upon runs at the strip - dyno numbers were also stronger than expected - 184HP on a Factory Pro Dyno - very conservative among dynos. I have been soft launching, with moderate roll on and short shifting first - a three gear pass with current set-up. Best pass so far 60' - 2.369, 330 - 5.476, 1/8 7.714 @110.66, 1000' - 9.610, 1/4 0 11.19 @ 142.51 into rev limiter at the end of trap.

My next change will be the 18-40 gearing, extended chain gaurd to meet tech requirements install on undertail. I will be removing the straps and increasing the tire preasure from current 28PSI to 40 PSI to emulate the set-up for Maxton. I will also try to improve trap speed with this set-up to 145MPH and potentally do some final runs without a burnout to be consistent with run procedures for Maxton. Also need to get a steering damper - have Muzzy set-up on back order and hoping that they will be available soon....... as they are required for tech. New Vanson leathers to conform to the tech requirements are also on order.

By my calcualtions the bike will be geared for 202 and I believe has enough engine to max out - although I am not sure if it can haul my 210 lbs to that speed by the traps at the end of the measured mile. I will be doing the licensing runs to Class B (175 - 200MPH) - and then I will shoot for 187MPH pass. If all goes well I may try to follow that with a full throttle pass to get a baseline for next season. I plan to run most of the events at Maxton next year, God willing and all else according to plans - in preparation for a Bonneville event next September.
Regards,
KSPZ3

Welcome to the board.
You've got a great bike for your new hobby.......it's addicting though!
I believe your goal is within reach but it will take practice. You can heat the tire up at Maxtons starting line, it's good to at least clean the tire off prior to launching since the added air pressure will cause more tire spin. With n/a streetbikes a good launch helps on the big end so work on your technique at the dragstrip. High hp turbo or nitrous bikes can leave softly since they're carrying a big stick.
If possible, bring extra sprockets as conditions (head & tailwinds) change. Work hard on tucking 'cause at 210 pounds it's hard to get small.....I know!
If you can get a spare seat to cut down, that would be great to experiment with.
Work on getting the bike to roll with ease, rolling resistance adds up.

Make sure all the work getting the bike ready is done at home, come ready to ride as working at the track eats up your seat time. Call the tech guys before hand if you have any questions so there will be surprises when you arrive.

Check your tire pressures before every run, safety is the #1 priority.

We'll be there in September, look forward to meeting you. If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask.
Good luck,
Dan

How soft are you launching it? I have a Zx-12, and am 230 lbs...and slow. My best 60 ft. time is 1.90, and my 1/8 is 7.09@110.5. This is with a 5500 rpm launch. Stock gearing and ride height. I never get out of 2nd gear....

Since you only have a mile at Maxton, you might want to be a little more agressive...just my .02.

Also, looking at your avatar.....get down low on the bike, man! Get your chest on the tank of that 14 and stay there!

Dan
I am assuming that you ran stock tires - I am about to replace at least the back and possibly the front.
Howhard can you launch - I am assuming that the track is not treated with traction compound - therefore a relatively soft launch assumed - am I right about that.
Did you have to install a fuel shutoff vavle or linings on the fuel line?
I know that I need to do the safety wiring - and change the vavle stems - anything else I need to look out for.
Thankks,
Kevin

I am launching at 2,500RPM - right into the bottom end limiter - almost like a throttle stop. The Avatar is on a VRod - and I launch that bike fairly upright - I have run 1.60 @ 60 w/10.94 @ 119.5 best ET - much easier bike to ride. I recognize that turning the throttle while sliding the clutch will drastically reduce the 60 and ET - but I have been trying to develop a routine consistent with Land Speed Racing - which will require high tire preassure and limited traction and higher gearing 18/40 - so two wheels on the ground and absolute traction. My practice routine has been driving all of my rocket jockey friends nuts, but I am patient and walking it up. I have been picking up about 1MPH on the big end every pass or two. I may have achieved the highest ET/MPH combination recorder to date....... bit it will get there. Anyway - I really like what I have seen from this machine.....

Kevin,
You're right, no starting line treatment of any kind unless you count the light dust that's on the course!
We ride the clutch more there than on the strip but we leave as aggressive as possible, usually on our bikes wheelies are not a problem due to the tall gearing and relative lack of power.
It's fun to watch the big boys carry the wheel through several gears though!

Use your gear indicator as most newcomers look for seventh gear....been there, done that.

Make sure your helmet is up to date per the rules. They are pushing for metal chain guards, you may want to call someone to make sure you are okay.

Since you have to make your license runs, you can practice launching and concentrate on tucking to get ready for the WFO passes.

Oh yeah, don't forget the teathered kill switch.
No fuel cut off valve needed since the FI bikes have tip-over switches. Nothing needs to be done to the fuel lines either.

Dan,
Is the stock battery retention OK?
Any advise on tires - stock OK?
What tire pressure do you run?
I have Shoei x-11 as back-up and Simpson Bandit as primary - no metal chin gaurd though - never heard of such a contraption........

It sounds as though my target of 145 MPH in quarter would be pretty close to optimal with full tire pressure and tall gearing..... that will be my next goal - with a nicely controlled launch.

Stock battery set-up is fine.
Your stock tires will be good as long as the tread depth is okay. It only takes 25 seconds or so to cover the mile so heat build up is not too critical.
We vary tire pressures depending on the weather, time of day, etc.
Ball park will be 50psi in the front and 40-45 in the rear.
Dan

BTW......I was talking about a metal chain guard in case I confused you.
