Pulled over the hard way!

I was entering the freeway from an onramp. Did my usual - look over the left shoulder, merge over to the diamond (car pool) lane. A bus was coming up in the car pool lane and I wanted to get ahead of it so I rolled on a little horsepower up to about 120 mph, just for a second, then, ahead of the bus with no one in front of me I slowed down to 90 mph, I always do when I know I didn't look for cops very well................well I didn't. Two motorcops ran up on me out of no where. One came along side and gave me the "you just pissed me off" look then rode up in front of me while the other came along side me and ordered me to the rt shoulder, they boxed me in. I thought to myself, I'm never getting out of this ticket, I was going too fast! As I rode to the right with the second cop riding up my tailpipe all the way to the shoulder the first front cop was allready stopped in the emergency lane so I pulled up behind him with the second cop behind me. The cop behind me was yelling at me through his PA to pull ahead of the front cop but I couldn't hear him, I just turned off the bike and got off. I turned to the back cop to see the barrel of his gun in my face! he was yelling "GET BACK ON THE BIKE" I almost pissed myself. I got back on the bike and just sat there. The back cop told me he was yelling at me through his PA but I wasn't responding all the way off the FWY so they were going to knock me off my bike or worse. I told him I didn't hear a thing through my helmet. Both cops started looking at my bike, one leaned over and looked at the speedometer then said "yup it will do all of that" the other said "didn't you see us?" I said I didn't. The cop said we pulled you over because we thought you saw us and were challenging us. I said "no way" then all the sudden they were cool. One said " you know if you ran we couldn't catch you" I replied I would never run, I don't like jail and felonies. The cop who earlier had his gun on me said :" you know I didn't have my finger on the trigger any way" I said I didn't look at your finger just the barrel hole in my face! They went on to tell me what they wanted motorcyclists to do when pulled over.

1) Pull in front of the front officer.
2) Turn the motor off.
3) Do NOT get off the bike!
4) Do not reach into your jacket.
5) Comply with instructions!

I was honest and told them I speed almost every time I get on the FWY, they replied "how could you not".
I can't believe I didn't get a ticket, just 1/2 a heart attack.

I almost had a 1/2 a heart attack just reading about it!
Glad it worked out for you.
I almost did the same thing. I nearly always accelerate getting on the freeway (after all it's called the *acceleration lane* right?).
I started to nail it and caught just a glimpse of a Camaro with "extra lights" hiding behind another car (intentionaly or not) so I slowed and merged at the speed limit (60 mph).
As soon as he saw that I was doing the speed limit, he sped up to 80+ and I followed him at that speed at a safe distance for several miles.
WHEW!

Things pass by fast when accelerating. Sometimes its hard to see behind you and look forward at the same time as you're warping down the FWY.
Like the cop said " How could you not speed".
I love this bike, I just have to learn to control the rider!

...nice story... ...and the cops were right: heed those five instructions and remain calm....you have a 50-50 chance of getting a coupon or not...I hate it when motorist/motorcylist do stuff and get the jump on me while I'm still scanning my front, back, and sides, to ensure that everything is as safe as can be before I get out and approach the vehicle...and the cop has less than a blink to do all of these things...as some of you have seen with in-dash cameras, shit happens fast when it goes very badly sometimes...

I was surprised to see how fast these guys went from very serious to friendly after they found out I wasn't an asshole, just a guy on a fast bike. I'm sure they see some pretty fucked up scary shit out there.
You have to realize this when you get red lighted.

that is why I hate cops, they are jsut to power hungry. I was pulled over about 2 weeks ago by a supervisor and that just has it out for every bike, I was coasting to a stop light he alsmot hits me by coming in my lane and cutting me off so I lock up the brakes, he jumps outta his car and grabs me by the back o fmy shirt and rips me off my bike....I barely had time to put my kick stand down....pats me down, takes my key and tells me to walk it to the curb so I do and he writes me a ticket for my plate not being able to be visible......what a dushe.

JUST a FYI on how weak the justice system is if you go into court and ple no contest you get no points and ask for community service and no fine.....works every time and I do the "community service" for a buddy of mine. I study TV shows ya know!

It just takes one cranky cop to ruin the rep of the rest of the police force.

By likewise, you can say that about sportbike riders also.

This morning, coming home from work, I was riding my usual ride over the Chesapeake bypass bridge and I was doing about 120+ and over the top I saw the cop - I'm thankful there was "tourists" driving down to Nags Head with there big vehicles - I hid. Also, go struck with a rock on my right hand going about 100+ - ouch that hurts. The was Saturday AM. I riding in back of a car and I can smell the cigarette smoke coming from the car - the driver then threw the cigarette out of the car - we then got stopped by the draw bridge and I looked at him, and told him I have you - the cop in front by 2 cars heard about it

Yea that really sux, when the driver is looks up at you in the rear view mirror and flick...there goes a burning butt. I've seen peeps toss all kinds of trash outta their car on the freeway when me or a riding buddy was behind them. And we don't tailgate or do anything to piss them off ,just Ohio redneck cager assholes. That's why I tape quarters to my tank. 100mph and $1.50 gives a great litter control lesson. And these jerkoffs wonder why we ride faster than traffic.

I'm also glad everything worked out for you. I hope that most of you out there understand that just as with any job there are good and bad employees. Law enforcment does its best to weed out the ones likly to be bad. Unfortunatly its not 100% as history has shown. I am a cop and have been for 13 years. I am also an avid speed freak that is why I got the 14.

What you have to understand is that in this line of work one mistake in judgment can cost us our lives. I love my job but I love my life and family more. Most cops get in to this line of work for the right reasons but dealing with negative situations day in and day out can give a guy a negative attitude. If you are contacted just be polite, HONEST and follow all instructions. The cop my come off like a jerk but that may be his\her way of controlling the situation to be SAFE. Either way if you still have a 50\50 chance in getting a ticket but you have a 100% chance of going home and so does the officer.

Just a little horror story to justify my statements:

One grave shift I was patrolling a rural area of the county when I came up on some motorcycles. They were doing stunts and driving fast. I noticed that they took the time to find a place to do it safe and in a place where there is little or no traffic and no homes. I stumbled on them so I stopped to chat. I had no intention of giving them a ticket . I was going to have to stop them but thats my job. I was a rookie at the time so I approached them with my guard a little lower than usual because hey I was just going to talk to them and they are sport bikers just like me. Well when I got out of my car half of them took off like rockets and the other few got very beligerent and physically challenged me. Well it ended in 3 arrests and one motorcycle down during a pursuit ending in a fatality. None of the arrested subjects had records. They just figured they were going to get HARRASED by the man so one got an attitude and the others followed.

I now approach EVERYONE as if they may harm me until I AM SURE they cannot.

Have fun!!

Ok So-Cal, Last weekend I went to the Rock Store again and right past Sunset at PCH I popped a wheelie coming off the light. I was finally down when I noticed a cop to my left and my friends way behind. The cop did the Hang-loose and I got the shit scared out of me.
Automatic wreckless driving and impound if he was a jerk.
P.S. So-Cal: A Friend has a helmet cam, and we are filming again this weekend. It would be cool to get two ZX-14's on tape. If you are up for it, let me know.

Jnybbad, yeah that kind of happend with a group I ride with. We were all out riding and stopped out in the country at a bridge to do some racing. Its out in the country with a good view of oncoming traffic. Anyway the Sheriff Department shows up because they had complaints about the motorcycles racing. ( I work in dispatch for the Sheriff and Police) NO racing for me.

Anyway the Deputy asks for everyones liscenses and one of the guys from out of town starts to get a tude and challenges the officer as to why he needs to show his DL when he wasn't actually riding when approached..

Anyway I knew the Deputy that showed up and he was cool about things. I walked over to the loudmouth and told him that if he keeps his mouth shut we would probably be let off with a verbal warning and no paper, but if he keeps running his mouth and we all get tickets, I'm gonna kick his ass. So officer friendly runs everyone (except me and cuts us all loose with just a verbal warning to take off and go race/ride someplace else. If your cool and polite with the police your gonna do better than getting an attitude, that will get you cuffed and stuffed quickly, maybe even a ride on the Tazer Pony....

I have a hard time with police. I truly appreciate the role that they play and how difficult it must be. When I am pulled over I am always polite and do the "yes sir, no sir" and as cooperative as I can be. However, it seems every time that I have been pulled over there is plenty of screaming and yelling from the guy.

True story: I was assisting a friend of mine repair his Suzuki Bandit 400. He had let it sit for a couple of years and the carburetors were gummed up. The only way to get it to roll down the road was in 1st gear full throttle then it would spit and sputter and then suddenly jerk forward. Of course that was time to let off.

We pulled the carbureters, sprayed them out with Gumout, and would take it out for another ride to see if we got them cleaned out. After a couple of tries both my friend and I took it out for a spin and did roll-ons to see if the carbs were fueling correctly. No speeding was being done, and there were very few neighbors. If you have seen some of the towns in Maine you would know the meaning of sparse.

Last ride out, nearly dark the bike is running really well. I get pulled over by a "Road Warrior" cop with the Camaro with light bar. He is screaming and yelling that he is sick and tire of kids tearing up his street on bikes. I am 35 at the time with 2 kids of my own. I politely try to explain that we are not speeding, but instead repairing the bike, while I am locating my license in my wallet.

"Shut up! You were speeding!" I calmly explain that both my friend and I were riding to repair the bike and that I know for sure that I was not speeding. Of course I don't have the registration and inspection since it is my friend's bike. I could come up with my license and my insurance card. I explained that my friend would have the registration at his house and that we should drive 1/4 mile to go get it.

When I drove to my friend's house there he was half in the left lane about three feet from the back of the bike almost daring me to bolt. At this point I am disliking the guy so I figured 10 mph would be just about right. After pulling into my friend's yard, he tells me that he is really angry because he clocked me at 29 mph hour and he knows that I was speeding because his daughter lives on the road and said she saw us speeding. It was a 35 zone with a 50 mph zone just 1/2 mile down the road. I'm not sure where his daughter lived, but there is a chance I could have gotten up to 55 in the 50 zone. Keep in mind that this is a 400 bandit, not surprisingly quick.

He tells me that he has all night and will be giving me a ticket tonight even if he has to go back to my youth record. After yelling at me, my friend and his wife for 45 minutes in their yard he declares it to be my lucky night, no ticket because he just got an emergency call. I didn't feel so lucky.

For any cops out there on this site, what do you think I did wrong here to have to endure this? Is there any recourse by going to the police chief with a complaint, or would I be harassed if I did?

Htosado,
We went to the Rock store last weekend, sorry we couldn't make it the week before there was a lot going on , my mom went to the hospital etc......
The Rock store sure has a lot of bees flying around one flew into my soda while I was drinking it, I may take a bee suit next time but the road (Mulholland Hwy) was fun. I don't think Ive ever seen so many beautiful girls on bikes ever in one day. I may need to get out more!
When/where are you filming? I need to learn to launch my 14 faster off the line without losing it. My lightweight son leaves faster than I do and he's on a 600, gotta get him so I need to practice launching.

It seems the trend is:
Cops in cars may not like bikers but
cycle cops tend to understand us better.
Maybe.....................Just an opinion.
