Lane splitting in California is essential!
Too too much stand still traffic, you guys have no idea what living here is like traffic wise!
But you have to be very very careful. I can't believe this guy was forcing you into the car to your right, didn't he realize he couldn't go right anyway, he would have hit the car to his right. Fucking drunks!!!!!
If you lane split in california you are responcible for any contact between you and anyone else. I have talked to many cops and the penalty for causing a collision while lane splitting could be a Reckless Driving ticket and confiscation of your bike.
Also, lane splitting under city jurisdiction, according to the city cops I've talked with, is up to that city. Here in Huntington Beach where I live if you go faster than the cop thinks you should or cause a collision, you will be arrested for Reckless Driving also.
Here's the text (verbatim) from the CHP's site: "Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible under California law but must done in a safe and prudent manner." The text used to also include "The motorcycle should be traveling no more than 10 mph faster than surrounding traffic (without exceeding the speed limit) and not come close enough to that traffic to cause a collision." but has since been removed. Perhaps they wanted to give cops more latitude to interpret what they thought was safe so they removed it.
It's up to what the cop thinks.

Transit Lanes
In metropolitan area of Sydney we have Transit Lanes. These are for the use of motorcycles, taxi cabs, and vehicles carrying more than one passenger. So no need to lane split.

Yeah our carpools work that way, and some highways have a motorcycle lane in carpool.

Ya carpool lanes are cool when they're moving, but most times they aren't.
Lanesplitting in the car pool lane can also get you in trouble if you cross the double yellow line. Just let your wheel cross when a cop is there and you can get ticketed. I was behind a Harley rider who was almost stopped splitting in the diamond (carpool) lane. There was no one in front of him but he was too wide to get by, there was enough room for a good (sport bike) bike to get by so I just left the diamond lane for a two car pass of the Harley and when I swooped back to the Diamond lane I looked over my left shoulder and there was a CHP already there, good thing I always do a head turn. Where did he come from?, sneaky basturd! If I wouldn't have looked I would have hit him. He started yelling at me for crossing the double yellow to go around the slower wider Harley. After he got it out of his system he just drove off. Most CHP's don't write you unless your doing something really dangerous.
Don't test them though.
The only time I had a mirror clicker was from another bike passing me slitting lanes in the diamond lane when I was slitting lanes. I was in front of him and I slowed for a car who had their rt blinker on like they were trying to get out of the lane prematurely and this guy on his "commuter" bike passed me on the rt when I was already in the middle between the cars. What an asshole. He bent my rt mirror foward and I chased him down yelling at him, but what are you going to do. I felt like kicking his bars and sending him down but I restrained myself. I was mad for 4 days after that. I couldn't believe with all these cars out there a BIKE hits me!

Lived in SF. I was splitting. Guy opens his door. I do a stoppie. i get off the bike and punch his window in. I walked back to the bike and then slowly drove off. I mean what a total jackass. He told me before he closed the door, that I should wait like everyone else.
I should say this was in 1987 and I was on a air cooled bike. Much hotter running and likely to sieze waiting for the bay bridge toll.
Like you have said the risk is the other guy and the psycotics in cars.

Head turns, Mirrors, front tires, and position(swerving included) are what I focus on when splitting. I don't pay attention to any thing but riding when I'm riding, unless I'm getting a handjob from a female passenger, then stay in the slow lane and spunk on someones windshield!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went from Daytona to Seattle in 51 hours solo in a Ford F150, back when the National speed limit was 55 mph. Jolt Cola and NoDoze were my friends.

We're going for sure, try to be there by 11:00 - 12:00.
Me and one son riding his 600 and one son sitting behind me.
I have 2 others that want to go but can't leave till noon, 70 - 80 mile trip (guessing) take about an hour, maybe shorter.
I'll try to leave here at 10:00 am.
There's always next week for my other Triumph buddies.
