clutch gone at 3k, what gives anyone?

Please help, my clutch is gone at 3k and all I've done is commute to work mostly, I've gone to the track once and have maybe 20 runs on the bike. Took it to the dealer and they said it's been abused, "I don't think so". I'm very pissed because I have carpel tunnel and I don't cover the clutch or brake like most people do and they seem to think I did. I've been riding sport bikes for 15 years and motorcycles in general for 26 years and think I ride pretty good. Is their any suggestions, you 14 brother.

Hopefully you did not tell the dealer about your 20 runs at the track. Sorry, but most dealers and manufactures will not cover anything that has been raced. 20 runs at the track plus 3,000 miles could put a great deal of wear on a clutch. Most people who race just consider clutch service normal.

FTS, Thanks for yakkin back, I know that clutches have to be replaced but at 3k that's kinda soon especially with the worlds toughest clutch or so they say at least at the press launch.

+1

I think that the dealer would also take into account the fact that most of the 14's are not having clutch issues. Not that you didn't get a bad one... but clutches going bad are commononly associated with abuse. If all of the 14's were having problems my guess is that they may look into it... but it doesn't seem to be a noteable problem to Kawasaki or the press. How bad is it? What oil do you use? Did it go all at once or gradually?? I wish you luck!!!!

I may have had a bad one due to the fact that my whole dash went out the third day I had it and now the clutch. It's very bad I went out on a nice quiet sunday ride and stopped for a few seconds, then decided to head back, kicked it in 1st went to leave and nothing. I slowly rolled on and limped home. Most clutches give warnings before going but nothing here. The oil is stock from the dealer on last change. Thanks for the luck I'll need it.

Hopfully the clutch isn't to much to replace as I'm going to medical school full time and don't have the funds this moment. Looks like a part time job for a while.

On most bikes with a side mounted clutch the replacement is fairly straight forward. A set of clutch plates and some tools along with a factory manual should take care of it if you do your own wrenching. If not, it should be possibly a 2 hour job plus parts at a dealer. I'm only guessing at that however.

Not saying you don't know how to ride but 20 passes at the track if you slip the clutch alot can really abuse the plates, plus 3000 street miles. I have about 25 runs and 3245 miles and all is well, but my launch style I don't slip the clutch as much as some guys.

Well, they could probably make a clutch that would never fail regardless of the abuse, but it would be the size of a dinner plate and weigh 25 lbs!

Schnitz has the stock fibers and steels as a set for $195. Not to expensive. I have about 20 passes on my current clutch, with almost 3000 miles on the bike, and so far so good. Oh yeah and im about 260lbs in leathers. Check what kind of oil the dealer used in the bike on the oil change and make sure it doesnt have any moly in it. Most reports are saying that moly oils will kill the clutches in this bike.

There are so many variables anything is possible. Type of oil used, when it was changed, how you up shift, downshift, on and on and on. I think when the clutch pack is taken out that will tell the story.

I changed my clutches at about 900 miles. But, 80% of my riding is drag racing. I also leave at 5500+ rpm's.

Earl B,

I am in Upper Marlboro. What part of MD are you in? Just seeing who's nearby.

Just curious about the 20 passes - were they hot laps OR did you have time in btw runs for the bike to cool off?

My buddies 14's clutch went after a 100 runs with lots of slippage to keep the wheel down.
