What's the fastest a ZX14 has gone? Hi all,
I was just wondering what is the fastest top speed we have seen from a ZX14 so far with the speed limiter disabled? Also what modifications were done to achieve this result?

I think OldKawboy's son Chad went 196mph recently. If memory serves me correct they went up one tooth on the front sprocket.Pretty impressive.

I'd be interested to hear the fastest recorded speed for a totally stock bike. That is stock gearing, stock exhausts, stock ride height, wheelbase and mirrors on. Electronically timed too, not optimistic speedo readings.
At a recent meeting mine went through the speed trap at 190.4mph and another 14 at 191.1mph.

Did you use any electonics like a speedohealer or yellow box? Did you disconnect the speedo cable?

I used a Speedo Healer, everything else totally showroom stock, even mirrors and full sized UK number plate. I set the SH to the convert kph to mph mode for that meeting. Gives loads of headroom above the limiter and you can read mph straight off the inner kph scale of the UK bikes speedo.
Going into Class 2 when I can get all the parts I need. That should be fun.

Do you feel you could have gone faster if you had a better exhaust and more streamlining or do you feel the limited just kicked in and all the power in the world wouldn't have let you go any faster?

Yes, it would go faster with more hp. With the way I set up the speedo Healer the limiter was at 300mph.
The spirit of Class 2 in the club I belong to is "unopened engine". So exhausts, power commanders, gearing changes, lowering and streamlining are all allowed. Elsewhere on the forum you will see that 196mph has been achieved with just lowering, removing mirrors and a change to 18t sprocket. Hopefully with a good exhaust and PC combination, correctly mapped, we can exceed this.

The 14 is fully capable of 200mph with only a front sprocket change. I believe Chad could have broke 200 with the bike slammed and some good fuel like MR1 or MR9.
His 196 run was at Maxton with only a mile to attain the speed, it would go faster on a longer track the way that it was pulling.
I've said it a hundred times.............The 14's are impressive!
Dan
Bob.....
Maxton is a certified timed event. The 14 Chad rode had the mirrors removed.
We felt that the bike would reach the 186 limiter with the stock gearing, it did on the dyno. That's why we went with the 18 toother, just to try and find out what it would run.
The bike only had 24 miles on it too.

Thanks guys for your replies. My father may be a bit optimistic but with modifications including a sprocket change to some pretty long gearing, he is hoping to take his ZX14 up to 250MPH. Is this goal a realistic goal or are we dreaming? This is to be done at the Australian Salt Lake Land Speed Trials in March 2007.

BTW, I was reading...Dangerous, eh?
The speed signal is first sent to the meter unit, then the meter unit sends it to the ECU. So it *might* possible to convert the signal after the speedo unit. That way you could see a buried speedo. Always a goal, eh? ____________

all4ford,
I'm thinking it will take 400 to 500 horsepower to run 250mph, hope your Dad's modifications consist of enough things to make this kind of power.
With normal bolt-ons such as pipe, PC, air filters, gearing, etc. I'd say 205 is within reach at Maxton, maybe a tad more. I have no idea what conditions are like where you guys will run at.
Good luck,
Dan

Not only do you need the Horse Power, you need the gearing right. For example an 18/36 ratio would only give 240mph at 10500 rpm. Assuming you can get a 36t rear chainwheel.
Then there's aerodynamics, quite important for these speeds.

I understand that big power seems essential to run these speeds, but isn't it possible to simply gear it better to increase the top speed. By that I'm referring to how someone else ran an 18 tooth sprocket on the front and ran 196MPH, is it possible to have say a 21 tooth sprocket made and run higher top speeds? I believe the ZX14 will easily have the torque to get the bike moving with this taller geared sprocket. Of course we will be performing some modifications but no boost.
Also a question for BobC, you commented on the aero of the bike. As you have already had the beast up to some decent speeds, what did you think of the aero stability of the bike?
Thanks so much for everyone's help, I know I'm probably a bit of pain with all these questions.

Gearing it right is ESSENTIAL but you have to have enough horse power too. My method is to rev to just below the engine cut-out in every gear but to have the overall gearing set so that peak engine power coincides with the target top speed.
The aerodynamics of the ZX14 are very good, as is it's stability at speed. Of course it will depend on the rider's size and whether he can tuck in out of the airstream, an art in itself. Some of the "bigger" guys in my club have sculpted tanks as well as using just a seat base with the padding removed. Getting the bike lowered will also allow it to run at a higher speed. Every little detail is so important at the top end and can make the difference between a winner and a loser.

Okay thanks for your help, I think i'm starting to get the idea. Now I've gotta see how hard it is to get someone here to make us a few different sprockets to try.

What do you guys think of a 18 front and 38 rear sprocket for Bonneville? Is there enough torque/power?

Mano,
Maxton is a one way event. Sometimes it works in your favor with a tailwind but more times it seems like it's working against you with headwinds.

18/38 would give you 216mph at 10000rpm. You would need something like 210 rear wheel hp. It's a bit over-geared, unless you're doing some serious engine mod's.
Even 18/41, just one tooth up on the gearbox sprocket will give 200mph at 10000rpm. I'd take a few alternative sprocket and chainwheel sizes if I were you.

Excuse my ignorance, but this is a serious question. Why would you need 210 HP for an 18/38 set up? Would the bike bog down and not be able to move or would it still wind up to the speed but need a longer distance to do this in? We have something like 6km of track to play with here in Australia.
The feel of the ZX14 to us seemed like it could handle the extra gearing, has your experience told you otherwise?
Its good to here from someone who is actually doing it, all the information you've given me so far is much appreciated.

I was just talking ball-park figures. It's all to do with the coefficient of drag. A given amount of power can only produce a certain top speed for any individual vehicle. The art is to gear the motorcycle to be producing it's peak bhp at that speed. Over-gearing will not produce more speed any more than under-gearing.
Of course you have to have the track length too. Here in the UK we are short of suitable places to run top speed events. The longest runway's being around 2 miles, that's 3.2 kilometres. It means we have to use standing quarter techniques to get the best speeds, unless the machine has huge amounts of power.

Now I understand, so the big part is figuring out the RIGHT gearing and of course still performing mods to gain sufficient power. You can never have enough power. lol
Another question, is the speedo healer still the only thing available to disable the speed limiter?
Also when is your next run BobC and how fast are you hoping to run?
