zx14 w/8miles on the odometer wont start:fuck

My cousin who lives in Boston,purchased a blue 14 today from Greater Boston Motors.He put 8 miles on it and stopped,when he tried to restart it it wouldnt start.They came and picked up the bike and said the battery wasnt charged properly and that instead of replacing the battery right there,they wanted to check it out from top to bottom to make sure it doesnt happen again .My cousin bought the bike in part because I have been singing its praises and hes a HP junkie also....My question....what do you think the dealer should do for him to make this right again. .

Not enough info for me. Bad alternator? Kill switch was in engine off position?

They told him the battery was bad...and took the bike back to the dealer"to check it out top to bottom"

This is an easy one to answer. The dealer should charge the battery and check out the bike from top to bottom to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Since I recommended the bike to him,I feel bad for the inconvenience and frustration he had to go through....I think an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii for two weeks would fit the bill.But then again....Im biased

Battery went bad in my ZZR1200 about 6 months after I got it. The dealer gave me a new one (I swapped them over the counter) no problems. I forget what the original battery was, but it was some cheapo brand. The replacement was a Yuasa... it was still going strong at 22k miles when I traded it in for the '14.

That's funny If a dealer (car or motorcycle) had to "give" stuff to every owner that had a problem under warranty, our toys would cost much much more. After all, increased operating costs usually translate to higher purchase prices.

I guess you could buy him the trip to Hawaii if you really feel bad about your recommendation. I think that would be a bit much but I'm sure your friend would appreciate your jesture.

I really wouldn't feel that bad. Warranty work can happen any brand and/or any model.

When I picked up my bike, they told me that I should ride for at least 20 miles to make sure the battery was fully charged. I am not sure what, if anything was told to him, but I have never only ridden 8 miles on a new bike that I have picked up. I rode the 14, 79 miles in the rain to get it home.. and I still didn't want to stop. As far as what they should give him?? This stuff happens on all bikes... it is not the bikes fault. I think if you gave him a free fill up when he needs gas, he will be happy. I can't see the dealer doing anything special. I try to avoid the dealers as much as possible! Maybe when he buys his oil and filters for the oil change they won't over charge him... that would be a fair deal.

From one who works at a car dealer my thinking are car related. If you have a bad cell in a new apparently strong battery, well...that battery is toast. Running one min dead the next.

However to be fair to your dealer 8 miles will not charge a new weaker battery properly. Modern FI engines are need "X" volts to fire up, if it does not have it, NO Start Period. Plus if the battery was activated a couple weeks before it will become weak fairly quickly. Even my bike with over 7,000 miles on her seems to struggle to fire up in the morning. In other words weaker than normal battery and a tight FI engine not a good combo.

If it were I, insist on a new battery and watch them drop the acid in it. Just an Opinion.

BTW here is another thought, if the dealer had the bike on the showroom floor, I going to take a shot and say that puppy was fired up several (100) times without a serious charging to the battery. If that's the case I would not worry much about the battery. The engine is another story but the battery should be fine.

If the battery was bad chances are the dealer did not take the time to charge it right, and therfore it won't last near as long in the long run as it should. Those battery's come without the acid in them and you first must let the acid pack run in for about an hour then let the battery sit for another hour, then charge on a slow charger for 24 hours, sometimes alittle longer.

Many showroom bikes do not have oil or gas in them. I would be very surprised if a showroom bike (not a test ride model) was fired up at all prior to the sale.

Any good dealer would have a mechanic go over the bike including a test ride before a sale. If I knew a dealer did not even start the bike prior to selling it I would run away. My bike came with a checklist signed by the mechanic who did the prep.

TJ, All suzuki and Kawasakis come with oil in the motors out of the crate, but you are correct on the gas.

I would not be suprised that one of the primary battery cables was not snug. It could of been overlooked by the set up tech.

i had problem with my 05 busa. for some reason some electrical problem had to do with side stand when it was down it drained the battery when i start the bike. had to push start it. after couple of miles of driving start back up with no problem.

Got it. I haven't worked at a dealership since the mid/late 90's. Back then, Kawasakis were not shipped with oil. I guess things have changed since then

In 2000 I was ready to take delivery of a new RC51, and that one didn't have enough juice in the battery to start even once. It also had some minor crate damage, so I bailed on the sale.
