Cruise control? Here's a thought...
Now we all know how something like vistacruise or throttlemeister works...
And at least some of us have wandered over to ZX12R and read up on what Ridgeracer is doing with the ZX12R's ECU...
So here's a request to the factory:
The ECU has a top speed limit. How about using this as a cruise control?
Now I don't think it would be safe to take away any control from the rider (ie; locked throttle, etc.), but what if you could select the cruise speed, then as long as you held the throttle open to the equivalent (or more) throttle position, the bike would maintain that constant speed.
So let's say you set your 'cruise speed' for 75 mph...You get out on the freeway and roll it up to speed. Give it a little more to account for hills, etc. The bike keeps it speed at 75, regardless.
Why this won't work on the present bikes:
The ECU program code is flash written to ROM. Now way to alter a single variable without doing a complete re-flash.
Workaround:
Dunno if a speedohealer will correct far enough, but if so, you could correct with a factor to reduce 185 down to 75. Would also be a great theft protection. Someone nabs your bike, just call the popo and tell them to be on the lookout for a ZX14 traveling at oh...45 mph. ____________

It's really much easier than that...real electronic cruise uses the VSS circuit to detect ground speed (according to what the ECU has been programmed to...like a specific tire diameter amongst other things). So, if you install an electronic cruise control like the Audiovox, it connects to the tach and the VSS (tach connection is used to detect engine speed, which must not vary more than a certain % during cruise operation) and the solenoid just stays parked at the position you set it at while the Cruise module monitors the VSS and Tach circuit. It's rudimentary, but works well...
Your idea...it still doesn't account for the mechanical aspect of the throttle cables...unless I missed the point...it would work on something like the R6 where you have the drive by wire throttle...but you really only need to use the VSS and tach circuits to get cruise happening anyway. ____________

Alot of the cruisers have electronic cruise. They even compensate for hills and other variables. They work just like cruise in a cage. They take up alot of space and cost about 4x as much. I think for the size, weight, and price my next one is throttlemeister. My last one was vista.

Matt's right about the size and weight...big heavy modules and solenoids...and they compensate only because the signal coming from the VSS (located right at the tranny cover on the 14) varies with speed...so when the speed drops or rises, the unit will either pull or slack the solenoid accordingly. Now, if you had fly by wire, you wouldn't need all that hardware...it would be snap!

I was sceptical about fly by wire. I have it on my Nissan 350Z no problems...I always wonder if I'm riding along some residential street and some guy presses his automatic garage door opener and my motorcycle takes off!!!! Or some kid with his radio controlled model car or plane.....I have seen what happens when two model race cars accidentally share the same frequency...

Fly by wire isn't RF based...it's a combination of a potentiometer (variable voltage) and cables...no RF in it...so the scenario you described can't happen as you thought...I could be wrong about some part of this, but it doesn't change the fact that it can't happen.

On my way to FCTLANT at Dam Neck, I used to go by Oceana NAS all the time. Next to the runways there, was a facility called FASFAC VASCAPS, I believe. Basically a huge honking radar set in a geodesic dome, about 120' in the air. If I didn't turn my car's radio off while driving past, it would wipe the channels and turn it off by itself...Weird, huh?

At FCTLANT they had one of the world's most powerful radar systems. Was before phased array stuff, just a big brute force setup. Scatter radiation would light up flourescent light tubes 120' below it.

My F250 Diesel is fly by wire. I once thought I had a big problem with it. When I hit the brakes it would light up the back tires into a full out smokey burnout. I had the Dealer tear into it 2x and they found no problem. Turns out it was just my size 16 boot hitting the gas pedal at the same time as the brake. Opps At least I did not run down anyone in the crosswalk!! ____________

I am looking for a cruise control and since it looks like you have used both:
1) Which one do you like better?
2) Why aren't you going with the Vista again?
3) Do you know of anyone else who makes cruise for the 14?
I just got back from a two day 1000 mile round trip and my right wrist took some damage. Right now two days later I can still barely squeeze my fist. A cruise control is a must but I don't want anything fancy, just want to know the options. Most I see on the internet are not designed for the 14. We want to cruise far sometimes like the other guys too. lol
