Long Haul Hi Speed Tire recommendation ? I'm starting to prepare for my upcoming September vacation. I'll be leaving Houston and traveling through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, back thru Utah and New Mexico and home again to Houston, TX. This ride should cover approximately 5200 miles over 11 days and you can imagine the roads we will be traveling. I don't want to change tires during the trip and will start on a fresh pair of something. I had good luck with Pirelli Diablo Stradas on my ZZR but would appreciate comments on other long wearing possibilities.

Thanks Fish ! Based on what I just read, I think I will be trying to locate some of the P spec Diablo Stradas that are recommended for the Busa. Should work fine for what we are going to do. I'll let you know how they perform.

I've got a 8.000 mile ride coming up in September. I'll be using that Pilot Road tire for the rear, but probably a Pilot Power up front. They should last about the same amount of miles for me...

I think Michelin makes a great tire. Won't have anything else on my other vehicles. Problem is, I look at the tread design on the Pilot Road and I just can't imagine putting it on my bike. I know it's strictly a cosmetic thing but I have a new bike and I don't want to ugly it up.
Now on the other hand, if Michelin and Continental were to merge and offer the Road Attack tread design on the Pilot Road tire, I would be one of the first to step up. Actually, almost any other tread design would win me over.

I have talked to several tire dealers and asked about the P spec Diablo Strada tire and as usual the answer I get is something between Huh? and Duh, I dunno!
I want to get them ordered by the end of July so that the supplier and UPS will have a full month to get them to me.
Has anyone here actually bought the P spec tire? Where do I get them?

I'm right with ya on that one! It's definitely an ugly tire. And it looks a lot like the BT-020, which is just as ugly...

THE RECORD-BREAKING AVON AZARO-ST
Cooper-Avon's Azaro-ST sport touring tyres have been making their mark in the USA - but in two quite different ways.
For most, the performance of a sport touring tyre can be judged in terms of mileage, comfort and handling. It is no surprise, therefore, to learn that a set of Avon Azaro-ST AV45/46, fitted to a Ducati Multistrada ridden by Gary Eagan, has broken the 'Iron Butt Association' record for a motorcycle ride from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska to Key West, Florida.
The record breaking trip covered 5,600 miles in just 101 hours, lopping an incredible 13 hours off the existing record. Over a variety of surfaces including some of the poorest dirt, gravel and rock roads of Northern Canada, the Avon's performed impeccably, and at the end of the trip rider Gary Eagan estimated that they were still good for a further 500-600 miles!
"Avon's AV45/46 sport tourers are the best tyres I've ever used in my million or so miles riding motorcycles", said Gary.
Meanwhile, on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah, another pair of Azaro-STs tyres was put to a completely different test as they helped set a new world speed record by a 1650cc Harley Davidson, which reached an incredible 225.819mph.
Understandably, a sport touring was not the first choice for the Fort Worth Texas based D&D Exhaust team who built the record breaking Harley. But, as various sets of sports rubber from a variety of leading manufacturers literally fell apart during testing, the team found that the Azaro-STs were able to stand up to the punishment of the record attempts better than anything else they had tried. In fact, the same set of tyres used for the record breaking run had been used for a number of tests and shake down runs beforehand.
Both the high speed and the long distance records were set on standard tyres from the Azaro-ST range. Pete McNally, designer of the Azaros and now Product Manager at Cooper-Avon Tyres commented, "Here are two examples of the kind of extreme conditions these tyres can endure. The Azaro range benefits from the very latest in tyre technology, including the SBC system [Spiral and Belted Carcass] featuring ultra-tough belts which can cope with high levels of dynamic stress." He continued, "The Azaros were the first sport touring tyres to be speed rated for fitment to the latest crop of super tourers, capable of speeds of up to 200mph, and this gives them the capacity to perform so well with both extended touring and high speed runs.
If you add to that one of the deepest treads on the market, the end result is probably the best sport touring tyre available today"
Also the only sportbike tire out with a road hazard warranty!

I finally got to the bottom of this P spec Pirelli tire. It is the Diablo. Not the Diablo Strada. It is rated at a higher speed than the standard tire but to accomplish that they weigh less and come with less tread. The P spec Diablo has 4 mm tread new. The Diablo Strada has 5mm tread depth new. The 180 Diablo Strada that I had such good luck with comes with 6.5mm tread depth new. No wonder it could go so many miles.
I have been told that the Continental Road Attack has 7mm tread. I will definitely look into that for vacation rides and commuting purposes.
