Cleaner/Polish for Stock Exhaust Cans

I was going for a ride yesterday and spotted some nasty chain lube residue on the cans and midpipes. Gave it a quick wipe down with some WD-40 on a rag and went riding. Got back and my cans had turned an ugly yellow color. I'm thinking it cooked the oil in the WD into varnish. What do you guys use to clean up the cans and make them look like new?

Here is something that worked for me, cannot say if it will work for you. The Meguiars wheel cleaner spray (pink squirt bottle) on a damp rag, immediately followed up with a damp rag and then a dry polishing rag. I had something get on mine, and this cleaned it off very nicely. No scratches either.

Simichrome works very nicely too, most auto parts carry it... I think wallyworld does too. Easy to use...

Simichrome is meant for chrome, so it isn't nearly as abrasive as Mother's or Eagle1 Nevr-Dull. Basically that means it will take you way longer to get the job done.

Buy a can of Wenol. It will last you a lifetime and cost a fraction as much as those little tubes. A 2oz tube of polish costs as much as $10.00. A 40oz. can of Wenol is $40 bucks. Do the math. The stuff works extremely well. The Germans must love to polish stuff as it seems most of the best products are manufactured there.

Yes, that also means that it's finer compound will reduce the chances of fine swirl marks in your nicely polished stainless pipes. We're talking about removing a tiny bit of WD-40 residue here, not 1/4" of fresh tar...

Nevr-Dull and Mother's aluminum polish remove the finest scratches, they don't make more.

Use whatever you like, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to use chrome polish on something that isn't chrome.

I ended up removing the remaining WD-40 residue with a mild detergent and water solution and then waxed the cans with carnauba and buffed em out to a jhigh gloss. Came out great! The color is permanently changed to a color like that on a nickle pated revolver, actually looks better IMHO than the stock color. It's a slightly warmer tone while the stock cans are what I would call a "cooler" or more bluish tone. Anyway, I'm happy and it didn't take all that much work. Thanks for all the great polishing tips!

I always wax the chrome pipes on my cruiser and it keeps water beeding for about 6 months. Amazing stuff that carnauba and it works just as well on stainless cans.
