600 mile service
Hey guys - what's up with the 600 mile service - the service manager said I need to have this service done - okay I can agree with an oil change, etc... - But, checking the valves and doing maintenance on them at 600 miles - WHAT gives!!!!

personally, i don't let anyone mess with my internal part of engine like adjusting valve etc.
do oil change, filter, check chain if loose, fluid, tie bolts and screws . that should be good enough.

I pretty much do the same thing. My last Kawasaki R-750 (1987) I had for 8 years - rode it cross country - and finally sold it years ago - with 70,000 miles on it - that was an awesome bike. Never really did much except chain, oil, tires, brakes - I might have changed to internal chain - but can't really remember.

they are not going to check the valves at 600 miles............................just change the oil and tighten every bolt you can see and don't worry about it. They would do a compression check and charge you 200 bucks.........

Great question - I overlooked the 600-mile check. After owning 3 VFR's the salesman said bring her for an oil change at 600 then they did not want to see her again until 16,000 miles.
With over 6000 miles on the ZX-14, this bike is running better than new and to be honest I will not even take her in for at 15,000 miles provided
1. The Valves are not talking to me.
2. My MPG stays normal, (for me 38-45 MPG)
3. The 14's oil level is fine. (After 4000 miles oil level is perfect).
4. Engine Performance does not start failing. My ZX-6 did in fact need its valves checked every 6-10,000 miles so I'm aware of the failings.
Hey mugsymd, I was invited to Lincoln a while back and I'm considering touring the plant provided I can make the timetable work. I will see what the Techs thinks of the 600-mile check.

I had the 600 mile service done at 560 miles, and I had them include the cost as part of my deal.

Yea I've been thinking of changing my name to HiMile14.
I'm planning another 2100 to maybe 3500 mile trip the end of July. I put an average of 1600 miles on the VFR after 50 months. I'm a bit ahead of schedule right now, month 2 does not start until July 4th.

Thanks Rob - looking forward to it - email me from this site - would appreciate the info. Heck, the owner's manual says nothing of it. Also, I found it odd that my 600 mile service would cost me 130 w/o the valve adjustment and an additional $50 if the valves needed adjusting???? Heck, oil change and check - I'm thinking $40 MAX. And, the oil filter is in plain sight too!!!! In fact, almost as easy as changing the oil on my Yukon - go figure an ob/gyn changing his own oil - (gotta keep those malpractice premiums down !!!!!!).

Your valves aren't a little noisy at 3K miles, the motor is just breaking in. 
Sometimes people get so used to the super quiet, super tight new motor sound that when the motor actually starts sounding like it should they freak out.
Keep in mind - a shimmed motor actually gets QUIETER as the valve train wears, not louder because the clearance decreases.

Best thing to do is follow the periodic maintenance chart in your owners manual or service manual and also keep receipts so if you run into any problems down the road you have the proper documentation.

Get Out of town are you really an OB/GYN? You meet the coolest people at this web site.
My wife says I can take one of her computers on the trip. Space is a bit limited, still something to consider. I guess if I only take 1 extra set of clothing he-he the problem is I start smelling after 2 days.
Last trip I covered 3052 miles in 3.5 days
Next trip I looking at 3350-3500 mile 4.5 - 5.0 days so I will have a little extra time to write.
Oh boy I can't wait. Question is should I change my oil before I leave? I should have 5,000 miles on her by then. Maybe a more important question is will the Spark Plugs make it to 11,000 miles without fouling out??
For the record I'm not planning on changing the oil or the spark plugs. In fact I was not going to replace the plugs until at least 15,000 miles or whenever they foul out.

I don't disagree with your thinking but I'll explain mine.
My VFR's oil gets changed every 8,000 miles per specification. Although the Kaw's Specification says 7,500 miles, I figure the extra 1000 miles (mostly hi-way miles) well..Things should be fine. I'm using AMS-Oil and I feel confident this is one of the best oils out there.
Having said that, I also know the last 1000-1500 miles oil life on the VFR it is clearly hotter than the first 6500 miles so something is happening outside the norm.
Rekon you can convince me to change my oil before the big trip, I'd just like you to explain your thinkings.

I know what loose valves sound like.
I used to set my own valves.
I drove mechanical lifter cars and bikes for 35 years.
My valves are probably a little noisy at 3k. And it might be just 1 or 2.
I wouldn't bet the farm on it. But I'm not a newby.

Not calling you or insinuating you are a "newbie".
What I am saying is that I keep reading threads in this forum where people are saying "my engine is making noise" (in generality).
It's a fucking motor people. They make noise and yes, they make more noise as they get broken in.
I read it all the time on the R1 site and it drive's me nuts. "Oh my God!!!! I've got 800 miles on my new R1 and the motor is more noisy than when it was new!!!!!!!!!".
I am sorry. I expect more out of the typical open class rider than I do the litre guys, but to be honest I see a lot of posts here that I never saw on the 12 boards and that leads me to believe there are people buying these bikes as first or second bikes and wouldn't know a loose cam chain from a thrown shim.
I'm just speaking my mind. Don't take it personally.

Guys...The 600 mile service is an oil change and a quick overall check on the bike...Something everyone here should be able to do themselves within 30 minutes....The 14 has to be one of the easiest bikes to do an oil change on...Basic stuff you can do yourself....They are not going to do anything that will justify the $100 or more price they charge..
Doing it yourself will not void your warranty no matter what scare tactics the dealer tells you...
And on the subject of noisy motors....Sometimes when you get a new bike you are not familiar with the different sounds it makes so nothing sounds out of the ordinary at first...After you get more familiar with the bike you begin to be able to make distinctions in the different sounds it makes and often these sounds get mistaken for a problem that doesn't exist...Alot of times the sound was already there but you just happened to notice it as you became more familiar with it...Kind of like when you hear some music and the more you listen to it you begin to recognize sounds coming from instruments that you didn't know were there...

Hey guys. The motor oil that comes in the bike for break in is a detergent oil...it is also going to have other things mixed in with it from the original assembly (assembly lube.small pieces of things that may not have gotten washed out during assembly from fresh machining etc). The break in oil basically clears all the junk out which is why the 600mi oil change. If you do your own oil change (or changes) its is a good habit to keep a maintenance log. I keep all my own receipts from my oil and filters and staple them in a 6x9 steno note pad and then note next to the receipt what was done and what the mileage is and any notes of anything i find loose, unusual etc. This way if there is ever a problem with the bike..then i have legitimate proof or examples of what I have done etc. Trust me if there is ever any oil related problems (unusual wear etc) the dealer may give you a serious hard time about warrany on it since you have no documentation on servicing. Which a maintenance log stands a good chance of overriding. By the way the 600 mile service is in the owners manual...page102 listed as service 1....0.6 x 1000 miles. Everything with a dot in the first colume of every page is what is done on that service. CYA=Cover Your Ass. Just my two cents.

Suicycle - Do you know if the oil used to check HP/TQ on the assembly line is the same oil we had in the bike at delivery? I would assume so but I really don't know.

im not positive to be honest...but my dealer and another mechanic friend of mine...who used to work at a dealer both said that they believe it is.

The metallurgy has advance where valve adjusts require less maintenance. Pg.102 of the owner's manual shows the valves first required check is at 15K miles.
I would bring this up to the dealer principal (owner) if you are paying for a valve adjust on a 600 service. Bring the owner's manual as proof. If you are pressured to ignore the book's intervals?... Hello!, Red Flag!
Keep the bike home. Do all your old routine servicing like any other bike you've owned. I see your list, and that's about it for servicing the 14.
Prep the bike like you are taking a trip on it. Check for tightness on each and every screw, nut, and bolt you can place a tool on.
Start on page 102; clear away every (0.6) black dot you missed on your normal routine. Then sign yourself off on page 200 of your owner's manual.
