how loud is brocks megaphone?
I like what im seeing in regards to hp with brocks megaphone. I currently have the muzzy pipe but was wondering how much louder a megaphone pipe would be over my current set up.
Is it liveable for street use? Is there enough ground clearance? thx

Loud, no, and no. Most that have heard it or used say it's just barely exceptable for street use. No ground clearance lost as long at you make only left hand turns. Brock himself said that it's loud. Interestingly, it makes just as much power with the baffel as without.
Want more power?? BOOST.....get nitrous!

I would think alot louder.. My Muzzy meg is way louder than my Muzzy oval on my zx14!!! I would think the Brocks meg would be as loud as the Muzzy meg.. I'm good for about an hour riding with my Meg before i just can't take the sound anymore...But i guess it's whatever you can stand as far as sound ...Ground clearance should not be a problem with Brocks street Meg system ..The side winder would be a problem for sure... One more item i saw little or no power difference between the Meg Vs oval can on my other bike, it was just louder....

Megaphones were originally developed to go along with sidewinder exhausts. Sidewinders for those that don't know, are equal lengh head pipes to the collector and are used for drag racing. With equal lengh head pipes, each cyclinder breaths equally. Makes more power, but at the expense of loss of ground clearance and you have to remove the bottom fairing. And the noise!
I see absolutely no reason to have a sidewinder/megaphone on the street unless you trying to compete with Harley bikes for who makes the most noise. The gain in power is lost when you can't hardly open the throttle before every cop in town is looking for you.

Ok did a sound level, on Brock's street meg. Set up was 25' away pipe side static, meter set for A weighting slow response. @2000rpm 86db, @3000rpm 89db @4000rpm 90db picked these ranges to cover approximate cruise RPM in town and freeway. It's not as loud as I thought it would be but riding to work I could hear it bouncing off semi trucks and sound walls and I was wearing ear plugs. Still going to try to tone it down a little. But it sounds mean as hell running it through the gears 
Full throttle 11000rpm in front of a cop your on you own 
I have made a baffel that seams to work will sound test and post results using same set up. You really have to tiptoe around town now. no ground clearance problems.

In Part 2, of my diary (on dragbike.com) I have a link to a video of Shine on the 14 with the Megaphone system. The video is about 1/2-2/3 of the way through the article where I start rambling about his 9.09 pass and it's directly below a photo of his 9.09 time ticket. It will take a minute or two (or ten if your Internet connection is slow) to upload the video, but you're able to hear the sound of the Megaphone from there if you're interested.
For now, that's the best I can offer as to the sound of the system.

Nothing about a sidewinder design guarrentees equal length head pipes. That's up to each designer and the limitations or perameters that they have to deal with. But of course that's always the goal. And actually, "ground clearance" can normally be increased. "Corning clearance" on the other hand is pretty hard to come by....

Brocks smeg made between 2-5 hp more across the entire rpm range
here:
No cornner clearance issues with smeg!
I love the sound, as do my friends.
It is on the loud side though.
Highway riding is ok, once moving i hardly notice the difference between it and standard aftermarket can.
I can live with it.
Mind you I don't go bombing through residential area's either.
Cruise and short shift around 18-2000 rpm on residential streets.
Heh, my 55 year old mother didn't think it was too loud, step dad never woke up when pulled into their driveway at midnight for a visit. she thought it sounds real nice, and thought it suited the worlds most powerful production bike!
She's rather conservative too!

What's the law in the USA regarding motorcycle noise ?
In Europe we are limited to 80dB (A) and all silencers are supposed to be stamped with a type approval mark.
Whether rider's comply or not seems to vary from place to place.

Well Bob, techically its not legal in the USA to remove, replace or even tamper with the stock exhaust AT ALL on a street driven bike.
But they dont enforce it much if at all. So it doesnt really matter.
Theres so many Harleys around here (Connecticut) with straight pipes that are painfully loud and they dont say shit.
Does any pipe maker have an EPA certified pipe on the market? I know yoshimura was trying to get one certified at one point but i dont know if it ever happened...???

Built the baffle sound test it the same set up @2000rpm 76db, @3000 rpm 80db, @4000rpm 82db not sure if the baffle hurt preformance as it still hauls ASS Street Meg with Brocks Map. It's still plenty loud for me but now I don't have to pull in the clutch at the sight of a cop.

How about the rest of the story. Is this baffle something you care to duplicate and furnish for others? I like the looks of the Smeg, but I don't want the sound.

Navigator 1" od stainless steel the spirals are a little smaller than the stock ID of the stock baffle about 2" over all. I also made a threaded block Tig welded to the stock baffle to give good thread contact for the socket head screw about 1/4". Unwraped the baffel to weld and replaced packing. A couple more Ideas in the works to get the best sound and power.

Also, for all those who might like it...we offer another baffle for the StreetMeg that takes it down a couple of notches over the 'standard' baffle that we supply. All you have to do is ask. Most of the guys actually like the louder sound, so that's how we package them.

Brock I will get to work on it next week, working on a better helix design. how about a Picture and price for the other baffle on your site and what the difference is between the two, through hole size, packing ?
