Wow, sorry to hear the bad news, but glad to hear that you sorta walked away from it. Thank God for safety gear.

A question for you about your Alpinestars GP Tech gloves: Are yours the current model with the ring finger and pinky tied together by the top leather flap? I was looking at picking up a set of the Tech or Pro models specifically for that feature. A friend of mine recently crashed and his most serious injury was a few torn ligaments in his left pinky. If your glove *did* have that feature, do you think it helped you at all? Just curious if that option is worth it.

I'm also looking at the new Kushitani GPR5, it seems to have some pretty sweet safety features as well, but since Alpinestars has a patent on the fingers tied together, it doesn't have that.

FTS,
I doubt they will total your baby, I suspect she will ride again yea??? I see about 5000 dollars damage (I'm going a bit high).
I would make sure to change your fork oil if they decide to rebuild, this will answer 2 questions ;^O. Were the forks bent? And was the steering messed with?
The tail looks very cosmetic, although the pipes don't look quite right. Maybe bent some but I'm not sure. Can you say Muzzy?
Front Stay is bent (I'm guessing) because the mirrors seem to have takin a nice hit. Lamps just bolt in to the new fairing so they should be fine (less cost).
Left & Right Meter panels (Both sides of the instruments) look fine but the pictures do not detail them.
I don't think I had see a piece of plastic that is not going to have to be replaced including the Speedometer, that puppy could be expensive.
If you can do it yourself and have the insurance company cut you a check DO IT, I'll bet you don't have more than 5-6 hours of work there. Save that 800-1500 dollars the shop is going to charge you to do the job and you will learn a lot about your bike. A heads up if you do, make sure to get enough screws and bolts to do the job. My Murphy when I replaced mine. I'm sure we can all walk you through the tougher challenges.

I bought my parts from DynomoHumm. They carry Honda parts I'm not sure about the Kaw parts but give them a call I'm sure they will be able to get a vendor for you. Hope this helps.

+1

The sad thing about bike accidents is the cager often will just drive away when you go down avoiding them.
Then your left holding the $bill.

The sad truth is:
to prove fault without witnesses, skid marks and paint exchange is the the proof of fault....... on a bike neither is a good idea though as we all know.....

Get well and be thankful your injuries are minor!
You will get to ride again.... thats a plus!

It could be much worse!
Hang in there buddy

Yes the last two fingers are sewn together. It probably helped as the break was at the last joint of my ring finger. Your little finger is vulnerable. Having the two sewn together does not affect your control or feel but it may seem a little weird at first. The fingers on the glove were a little long. While I had the GP Tech gloves, I think that the GP Pro offer the same protection but are easier to put on. The hard plastic wrist cuffs make the GP Pro a little more cumbersome.
Something to think about is that the current design of many gloves has carbon fiber knuckle protectors. Ever see C/F that has hit the pavement? It splinters. Nuff said. The hard plastic knuckle protectors worked brilliantly.
By far the most important feature in a glove is if it will stay on in a crask. Th A-Stars have a velcro wrist strap covered by a flap that keeps the gloves on no matter what. I had to instruct the paramedics how to get them off of me.
Remember the crash video of the girl on the freeway with the helmet cam? You can see her glove laying yards away after the crash. A glove does zero good if it does not stay on.

If not for the full face helmet I would probably had facial reconstructive surgery and been missing a few teeth. I landed face first into the tarmac. 8 stitches to the inside of my mouth and a very bloody nose.
Thanks Arai!

Brother, Sorry to hear this happen to you. I had something similar happen to me on my 1999 Honda CBR Blackbird XX.

This guy cut a left in front of me from the on coming lane. My reaction time was good enought to avoid getting slammed by the car, but I couldn't hold the bikes line and flew off to the right and the bike slid on the payment for about a 150 feet. I think the "link" braking had a part in the avoidance but this is for debate. Both tires skid for about 15 feet and i was only traveling about 35mph.

This is the part that you need to listen to:

I was so pissed and worried about my bike, I didn't even pay attention to my injuries. The guy stopped and new he fucked up. He was scared I think of me going to kick his ass. I told him he was going to a have to pay for this or his insurance would. At first he said he didn't have insurance and would pay out of pocket. At first I told him guessing that it would easily be $1000 just for the cosmetic stuff. After five minutes had passed the police, fire department and medics were on there check me out and "miraculously" the guy found his insurance card. I told him that I would be in touch. Well by the time I got back home I talked with my lawyer and he said he was at fault and even though there was not an impact, he caused the accident to incur. After this I let my attorney deal with it.

To make a long story short...

Go to the doctor every other day until your 100%, make sure to keep a log of times and bills
If your out of work, make sure you include time lost.

As for the bike, Sell it
I had $4000.00 for just to fix the bike. And my mistake was trying to fix it. It will never be new and will aways haves some problems

Their insurance should cover all your medical bills and reabilitation, lost wages, damages to the bike, and extra for pain and suffering. My case got me $30,000 and I was banged up.

If you have broken bones, the case is worth more. My attorney was great, and he took all the stress off of me having to chase those insurance people down.

If you like you can call him: His name is Andrew Agard 808-540-0044 in Honolulu.

But you really want to take the medical part to the max as far as treatment and reabilitation.

If you have any questions you can email me: jamesnovey@hawaii.rr.com

Good luck.

James

Sorry to hear about this FTS. That sux. Glad you had that helmet on. If only certain football players had that kind of sense (vbg).

Your experience plus seeing two of my riding buddies go down due to front wheel lock ups is the reason I'm holding off on the 14 until it comes to the states with optional ABS brakes. They're offered in Europe so I suspect it'll be offered here soon.

FTS, In Florida you are not required to wear a helmet. And the insurance company decided it was not going to be covered. My adjuster says keep your plastic and sell it to your local salvage yard, that should cover your new helmet and gloves. The dude was very cool and I still have a very scratched up VFR plastic in my attic.

PS that sticker on the front of your helmet made my day.

The insurance company will pay for a new helmet.
By the way the last pic on the sticker that was worn away is a martini glass.

FTS - Thanks for the feedback on the GP Tech gloves, that really helps. For what it's worth, they certainly do look like they weathered the storm well. You can't even see damage that might have caused your finger break. It must have gotten smacked just right on something for that sort of break.

Thanks for making the point about the GP Pro gloves possibly being easier to put on and take off, I hadn't thought about that. I'm still up in the air between the Alpinestars GP Tech/Pro and Kushitani GPR5 gloves. I sure wish there was a local shop that carried them so I could try them on for it. I've heard that the Alpinestars sizing is a bit funky... either too tight, or fingers too long. Heard that in a few reviews, and now from you...

just hope that insurance will totalled the bike and pay you for new one. normally has to be 75% of the value of the bike in damage to total the bike since it is a brand new bike. that bike will never be the same. insurance company should pay you retail + tax title if totalled.
wish you the best. hope for speedy recovery.

Insurance is there to save you from catastropic loss, not to allow you to make a profit from property damage. They typically pay market value. The bike has mileage on it so it is used. Tax, title and license are not insurable as far as I know.

I looked up NADA book and it listed 11,499. Full retail. It looks borderline to me if it's totaled. I'll find out tomorrow. The frame and engine looked ok. Could be hidden damage. It would have to have over $8,000 in damage to be totaled. The instrement cluster will be expensive. I wonder if the bike will have a salvage title due to the fact that the mileage will be off?

you are right about hidden cost till they start getting fixed piece by piece and realize there are more damages. sometimes it is benefit to insurance company to total the bike and sell it in parts.
