My day at the drags
I went too the drags today. Best ET was 10.27, best 60ft 1.715, best MPH was 136.360.
I took first place in the bracket race and won $60.
The bike is completely stock, it's blue, the fastest color, and I was at sea level. Temperature was 90 deg. F. and humidity was about 60%.
This bike is hard to launch. I have about 800 miles on it now, and can't quite seem to figure out the clutch, although i'm getting the hang of it. The front end wants to stay up in first and second.
I don't know why it won't run any faster, but I made about 20 passes, usually 3 back to back, no clutch slipping, and consistent 10.30's at 135 mph.
I just ordered about $600 more parts from Ryan Schnitz, so now i'm going to stretch the swing arm, 16t front sprocket, non o-ring chain, strap down the front end, and see what it does. I already have the Muzzy pipe and PC ready to install, just wanted to see what I could do with it before all the mods.
I must say I'm a little disappointed. I expected to at least run 10.0's and 140mph, but there is just now way this bike is gonna run that quick with me on it. Im 185lbs. And I used to drag race bikes a lot. Just having a real hard time launching.

My 60 for was worse than yours.. I don't think you weight killed much of anything , you are only 30 pounds or so heavier than me...My guess is your not shifting at the right RPMs or in the wheelies you are shutting the throttle down...If You do that in first and second gear your times and MPH are going to off .... There are 200+ pounders out there that go mid 9s on the zx14, you just need more seat time ....If you add all them goodies you ordered you will have to relearn to ride it again... Glad you got a win and the 60 bucks will be great mod money ...

Gotta be the wheelies. Methinks he's launching at too high an rpm. And unless two guys are at the same track on the same day, it's hard to make direct comparisons. Man, I remember the first 9 sec pass on my 12R...9.71 sure felt a zillon miles an hour faster than my usual 10 something.

What RPM are you shifting. looking at some stock dyno figurers the stock 14 peaks at about 9,500 RPM. I will try to shift at 10,000. Also are you using the clutch to shift???

Question----if you do not fan the clutch to shift, how are you shifting?? Pre-load the shifter and blip the throttle??? I could never get the hang of that. When Dynojet introduces the PC and offers a quick shifter as an option, that will be the way to go. Had one on a Busa and man was it slick.

I'm shifting at 11,000. I pull in the clutch just slightly and snick it into the next gear. The front end comes up in first and second but I don't really let off, just squeeze the clutch in a little.
I used to have a pro-street drag bike. It was an 86 GSXR 1100 bored out, lowered, stretched, slick, automatic airshifter, and nitrous. Best pass was a 9.24at 151mph.
I haven't drag raced since about 1991, so I'm a little rusty, but I'll get the launch down. When I get the thing lowered and stretched, it will be just like launching my old pro-street bike. Right now I'm trying to launch the ZX14 like my old drag bike and it's killing me. Front end comes up, slow too shift, etc.

sounds like you might be brushing up against the rev limiter....... shift earlier....

There's a rev limiter?? I thought the blue ZX14's didn't have the rev limiter

Yup there is a rev limiter on the blue ones and you maybe hitting it ..It would hard to tell with stock pipes if you where hitting it ...The bike is so quite.....The bike with stock pipe seems to nose over hard after 9500..After the muzzy pipe install it pulls hard till the rev limiter....It's the fast red ones that have no limiter ....lol....

yes I would agree, shift around 10,000, to keep it in the meat!
My light is set for 10,300, and although i do not have time to look first 2 upshifts, if you keep using the light, it will become second nature to hear the shift point.
The limiter kicks in at 11,400 on mine too...
And if it does hit slightly you will not hear it, if you hammer into it you'll know when it noses over!
Preload the shifter from 1-2, but lever does not return quickly enough in other gears so do not preload other shifts whenn racing.
Just practice for a couple days even casual riding, then it will become habit, preload before shift and soon as you let off get back on the throttle,
I only clutch 1st gear, and down shifts!
