Ear Plugs
Any suggestions on a source for good ear plugs for use with a helmet?

I use the Howard Leight Laser Lites and buy a box of 100. Think I paid $25+- last time. Here's the info:

When I flew F-14's (by the way a VERY LOUD Aircraft inside the cockpit with the A/C going) - I wore foamy earplugs - but I didn't start wearing them until it was too late. I'm 43 and half of my hearing is already gone. I guess staying around jets and flying them plus riding loud bikes doesn't help much. Oh, Just use soft foamy ear plugs (warm them between your fingers, place in your ear canal(s), and allow them to expand (and NOT touching the TM - i.e. the ear drum). With a helmet and earplugs you should be fine - and you can still hear the occassional cop!

Yeah, my hearing deteriorated a bit after being around missles. To say they are loud is one hell of an understatement.
I wear earplugs EVERY time I get on a bike 'cause I want to keep what hearing I have into my old age. The wind roar you get inside your helmet is far worse than the noise from any aftermarket pipe which is why I wear them.

Thanks for the responses, I use the foam ones now, but remember a post a while back about custom made ones, that can be modified for ear bud head phones, or left alone for almost total noise reduction, and long range comfort.

Back in the early 70's we fired off outdated guided missiles out over the Gulf from an Eglin AFB auxiliary facility on Santa Rosa Island, Florida (yes, I'm an old fart!). The guys at some of the bases around Florida would try to chase them and shoot them down. One of the missiles was called a Bomarc. The other was one whose name I no longer remember but it was a Korean War vintage subsonic rocket (possibly the first missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead) that looked like an old jet fighter with no cockpit. It had a normal jet engine and a RATO bottle stuck on the back. I was usually only about 50'+- away and behind a cinderblock wall inside a tin shack when they lit that RATO bottle off. Loud?... oh yeah. The Bomarc was even louder but we did our thing on that rocket then got several hundred yards away from it before lighting the fuse. If I remember correctly, we got back away from it before it was even fueled. It used an exotic, extremely volatile liquid fuel so they made us get a long way back. Sounded like someone had let out the banshees from hell when it lifted off the pad.

I got a pair of custom molded plugs at the bike show last winter. If you go that route, get ones with a cord. Mine always come out and drop on the ground when I remove my helmet. If you want custom plugs just look up an audiologist and they can set you up.
Otherwise the foam plugs work very well, are cheap and easily available at any drug store.

ditto on the custom ones. i DEFINITELY wouldn't describe them as "almost total noise reduction". certainly better than the generic ones tho, and more comfortable because they dont put as much pressure on the inside of your ear. they dont fall out either. i can even wear them when i' sleeping with moderate discomfort at most, whereas foamy earplugs had me waking up in pain. yes, you can get micro earbuds included, which makes for great audio from your chatterbox or other source, tho they seem to charge ALOT for that option. defintily too much imo. i jsut turn my chatterbox up and still hear it thru the plugs.

Foamies are cheaper - and by the way, just as effective, especially if also wearing a helmet.

If you use or listen to music while you ride, check out the Westone UM2's or the Shure E4 or E5c's. All of these have great noise isloation and sound fantastic too...just make sure you get the triple flange buds if you go with any of these; they offer the best noise isolation of all the buds.

Earplugs
Try the H earing Association or similar organisation. The can take a mold of your ear and custom fit a silicon ear plug. Much much better than foam or whatever.

You can tell a lot about a guy by the ear plugs they wear Eh. I bought mine from Wal-mart 10 for like 3 dollars. Another advantage is keeping road dirt out of the ears.

Get a custom set made at a show, you won't be sorry. Those damn foamy things always fell out of my ears.
