Power for radar detector

For you guys that have done this already. Can you post some pics or describe where you hooked into switchable power for a radar detector. Thanks...........!

I am traveling but the procedure was stright forward.

Pull the right side grill, forman type, and loosen the ground nut you see there. Put your ground wire to this point. Then pull the wire to the area under the seat. Put back on the grill.

Take the positive line and pull the horn fuse, wrap the power around the fuse and re insert. You now have a switchable power source. Connect to the radar detector and turn the bike on. It should power up.

I ran the wire for my valentine up under the tank. It come to my Ram mount on the left hand side of the bike. The V! sits there and the plug is simple to put in and out.

Hope this helps.

No pics, but it's pretty easy... I just pulled the left-side front marker lamp, stripped a little insulation off each conductor about 2" from the lamp socket, and soldered my power leads right in there. Wrap each with electrical tape, then wrap those both together with tape. Run power lead right up beside the existing wiring harness to the left-side controls using small zip ties. It's easy and clean... took about 20 minutes.

No, I'm using the "positioning" lamp, not the turn signal. It's the white marker light that is always on with the key.

If you pull the socket/bulb out from the reflector housing, there is plenty of slack in the wire to work on it. I think I had to peel a few inches of Kawi electrical tape off the wires to clear a spot to work on it, then I wrapped it back up with new tape after.

Ok, zerMATT, one final question. What's the best way to get to the reflector housing. It looks like I need to pull of the inner fairing............

Sorry, yes, just pull off the inner side faring pieces that cover the ram-air intake tubes. That'll give you plenty of access to that area.

It's a tad difficult to pull the bulb/socket from the lamp housing - it's in there pretty tight. I ended up putting a pair of standard pliers on the lamp socket loosely and giving it a slight twist to "pop" it free from it's detents, then I just pulled it out of the housing with my hand. Just be careful not too squeeze the pliers too much, you don't want to crack the socket.

You know, in Virgnia - you sort of need a kill switch for the radar detector since they are illegal here - and the cops here have radar detector detectors - I pretty much don't use a radar detector in VA - it's not worth the aggrevation, fines, court costs, and my time.

Nothin' to laugh about Matt, that's what the police use...called VG2 (and now VG3 in limited usage for now). Specificaly designed to detect the presence of a Radar detector in a vehicle. It's actually parts of the Radar they use and it's used in states where the detectors are illegal...such as NY, CT, VA...etc. They use is here in Canada as well. Serious fines and point loss if ya get caught here in eastern Canada

Neither does my V1...though I did read about some new "detector detector" technology out that NO current detector is safe from...still trying to find information on it.

No, fba, what swft said was a joke... read it again.

The police use a "radar detector detector" (aka VG2, 3, et al), swft said "radar detector detector detector", as in something that could sniff out a VG2, 3, et al... quite funny!

Except for moving Radar, Ontario is mainly Laser now
And yesterday I was talking to an officer running laser and asked him if it was hard to lock onto a bike, he said it's not as easy but just then an R6 rounded the corner and the officer locked him with a Laser Atlanta model at 383 Metres at 85 Km/H.
He told me he aims at the rider....
This location only allowed for this range, as cars were hitting at this distance as well.

Aiming at the rider is the best choice for a motorcycle. There isn't much reflective on the front of a sportbike, and the rider's outfit usually contains enough retro-reflective bits (jacket piping, stripes, helmet reflectors, etc), that a laser can lock on pretty easily. I was tagged Saturday in Austin (TX) by a Travis County cop, he got me from pretty far away... not sure of the exact distance, but it was pretty far... like maybe as far as 600-800'. Was going 70 in a 55... but I'm pretty sure that he just wanted to look at the '14 when he pulled me over... no ticket .
