Best way to align rear wheel?

Lookin for a more technical response than check the marks.
Bike seems to wander more than it did especially leaned over, maybe its just the rear tire getting square...worn down the center.

Considering adjuster marks may be out on the swingarm......
I was thinking of measuring the distance of the adjustment bolts with vernier caliper and making sure they're the same.
Seems to be the only way with regular tools.
Is a there a better way?

I would like to measure from front to rear axle on both sides but a special tool would have to me made to clear the bodywork and motor.

Also, why did kawasaki make the rear brake hose soo long, and all the wire hoops, and extra curves ?

Does anyone else notice much torque steer / swingarm or frame flex when making transitions on the throttle ?
It seems more apparent to me at higher rpm when accellerating or engine braking hard.

Calipers...and measure the space from each side of the swingwarm to see that it is the same...that's what my dealer does when I push him...when the tire wears and squares...these big bikes will start that shit...my Busa was famous for that...as is my Road King too...TQ steer..yup...too much power and to much brake...very heavy bike...my Busa was like that too...they laughed when I said TQ steer and called me an idiot...as that term is supposedly reserved for front wheel; drive cars...but I know exactly what you mean dude...your tires must be showing 1/2 wear now...

I think the best way to align a rear wheel is with a wheel alignment tool. These are available from a number of sources. Here is just one...

Dubious, Are you looking to align the rear sprocket to the front sprocket or align the rear wheel to the front wheel?
Two very different procedures.

The key to having the rear tire track behind the front tire accurately is using string and aligning the rear wheel to the front wheel. Its more important for good handling. Aligning the rear sprocket to the front sprocket or aligning the rear tire/rim to the swingarm does nothing for handling.

Do a search, theres been a few good threads on how to do the string alignment on here.

Or take your bike to a Computrack center, they will bend the frame into place for you and get it exact. These bikes are all WAY out of spec and alignment, the frames are all over the place on several axis. R1's are notorious for being way out of wack from the factory. They need to be all bent up to get them into spec.

Call computrack they can fix you up if you think you have a tweaked one and its that bad.

What you want to do is load the swing arm (strap the rear end down) as if you compressed the suspension over a bump. Make your chain's free-play in this area at minimum book dimension. When you release the load on the swing, the chain will have more slack. Remember to compensate for this by guessing at a static (unloaded) adjust.

Buy two inexpensive laser pointer wands. Build two boards out of perfectly straight type material, so you can attach each wand to the board. Mount the straight edge(s) against the bottom side of the rear tire. Straighten the front wheel. Turn the beams on, and measure the distance between the front wheel. Just for effect, turn the light off in the garage. Note how the angle of the laser beams are pitched to one side of the front wheel if you are measuring a bent frame with your newly made wheel alignment tool.
Move the rear adjusters until the front beams are evenly spaced between the front wheel.

Hey. .
Wow.
Now were talkin!

The chain is clicking at speed, like sprokets are not aligned.
In fact on the stand idling in second gear the chain is straight for 75% then swerves over to right for 25%, and then good again for 75% length.
I'm going to start with lazers and such.
16 tooth Frt sproket, and 4-1 pipe coming next week and its supposed to rain for a week now so I will have a better look when the left bazzoka tube is gone and the clutch slave/ sproket cover is already off!

I knew eventually some great minds would share their knowledge.
Some really good guys around here!
Thanks a bunch.

Was going to start a thread but figured I'd revive this one. Anyway, my problem is the bike wants to turn right when I let go of the grips. I have to lean left quite a bit to keep it straight. What can I do to correct this? I thought if I just moved the left side of the rear axle back it should fix it but I'm not certain.

No, having the problem on my ZX-14. Tire in front is brand new. Problem was the same before the tire change. I moved the right side of the back wheel about 3/16" further back than it should be looking at the marks, but it pulls less to the right now. I'm afraid to move it back any more that it might cause problems if something else is the cause.

hey guys,..i use a tape measure from center of rear axle to center of swingarm pivot bearing, and repeat for both sides till you get ii the same.....also you guys the BEST investment to make for your 14 is a new set of "ALL-BALLS" headseat bearings...part#221039.....approx...$50....stock bearings suck...they have the old style w/acheap plastic ring holding loose round bearings....the all balls are roller needle bearings
