Synthetic Oil Question
I know you all hate these questions and I know why. Look there is no question that my 14 is going to be switched over to Synthetic oil; My question is when? As a man who Tours I put a ton of miles on a bike, not hard miles (unless you consider riding 18-21 hours at a time hard). This morning I went to fire up the 14 and the 1st second or so there was a Nasty sound came from the engine. If I were to guess it sounded as if there was oil missing somewhere in the engine. By the 2 second all was fine but I have to say I'd feel better with the protection of Ams-Oil.
To the Question: With 2000 miles on the engine, is it too early for synthetic?
And has anyone else heard this said noise or any noise?
Thanks in advance. Robert

I haven't heard the noise you're talking about. I just put synthetic in mine at a little less than 1000 miles. Since it spent a few days at Deal's Gap, I'm sure it's broke in.

Was this a one time (phantom) noise, or will this happen consistantly when started cold?

Speedgene this was the first time I heard it. It was a little cooler this morning for Florida 58 F. Here's how it went. Turned on bike bug zapping was the FI from what I understand (normal). Then I hit the starter button and to me it sounded like steel on steel, then all was fine. Everyone I've talked to seems to believe that by 2000 miles synthetic oil is fine to use so I'll be changing her out tonight. Besides I did not have a filter at the time of the first oil change so I can redo all. Thanks all.

I change oil in my new bikes at around 400 miles, Castrol GTX Dino oil until 1000 miles and then synthetic. Ay 2K miles your 14 is as broke in as its gonna get IMO.

Thanks Blitzkrieg, I called Kawasaki and they gave me the green light. Hey guys with just shy of 2200 miles on the 14 this is one smooth engine. 2000 mile trip starts Friday.

Blitzkrieg, I plan on leaving Friday Morning heading to Deals Gap, St. Louis then over to Virginia Norfolk and Home. Give or take 2500 miles. I'm not a big fan of riding this weekend but I'll do my best to keeping my speed legal.

I've heard a similar noise when my bike is first fired up. can't say it sound metalic though, more like a gurggle for the first second. In my mind it doesn't seem like something wrong more or less just how it is.

You'll have a good ride.
Now is your chance to try out WD-40.

Yeah, it's a great water displacement (WD) for your electricals if you're planning on riding in lots of rain...
And I suppose a shot in the shorts every now and again could help keep the 'ol chaffing down...
Just whatever you do, DON'T use the stuff on your chain.

And why is that? Used it for years without any failures or excessive wear. Chain lube sux ass and only attracts dirt! You won't find better maintained bikes than mine anywhere. WD40 is all I use on the chain. The chain is as clean as a pin and the rear wheel spins like a bicycle wheel up on the stands. What more do you want? A mess to clean up all the time and some power robbing GLUE on your chain?

The noise is normal. It is the cam chain tensioner. Kawi. went with a oil pressure control tensioner on this bike, I do not like the noise either but it normal.

You say that like it's a bad thing...
Let's just say that our experiences are not the same...
I've been told stories of guys running the same chain and sprockets for 1,472,915 miles at full throttle using only WD on their chain and, after sending the whole shebang to a secret lab tucked away behind Joe Bagadonut's shed, finding zero wear.
And I've been told stories of guys using WD as their only chain lube, and having to replace their chain and sprockets after idling down the road 4 blocks.
I fall somewhat in the middle, but I've experienced longer component life using a standard high quality CHAIN LUBE (which shall remain nameless as that would be a truly ugly thread) instead of a WATER DISPLACEMENT FORMULA. Go figure.
Lemme ask you this: Would you recommend that I use WD as the sole lubricant on a '16? Or a '60? Or a '240? Or an M10? Or an MP9?
(and yes, I know the lube is inside the chain... It's a question of what something is made for)

I have had GREAT results with WD-40 for the last 20 years. I have used nothing else and my chain has always lasted, with little adjustment. I spray it down after every ride.

I like to clean the chain with a WD-40 saturated rag, then give it a light coating of a quality lube that doesn't show as much "glue" tendancies as some other lubes (NEVER use PJ black...). After that quick spray, I do one more wipe-off with my WD-40 rag to catch most of the excess lube in an attempt to keep my chain and rear wheel clean. That's always worked pretty well for me...

Blitzkrieg, Nothing but WD-40 has ever touched my chain. Thanks for reminding me of who suggested this. After 2275 miles WD-40 has a bit of maintenance follow up after it's sprayed on. Seems extra spray likes to gum up the exhaust, nothing a little SOS pad can't take care of.
