Guys i need a favor

I think i'm hearing things ..This noise may have been there all along but i'm hearing it now and it seems to be getting louder .. ... Setting on the bike parked with helmet on engine running with the clutch lever pulled in i i hear a knocking sound .... If you raise the throttle from idle slowly to 2000 rpms you hear it and as the motor decells you i hear it..... I first noticed this when coming to a slow stop and down shifting to first gear , on decell i here a knock....
I tried to hear with the bike running helmet off and listen for it top to bottom .. The knock can be heard better From the top over the gas tank.... I can't really hear it if i get low to the engine a get my ear close to the motor... It's not the clutch ... But if i put my ear on the steel part of the gas tank close to the gas cap and rev the motor slowly from idle to 2000 rpm you can really hear it loud....It's really bugging me...It sounds like a rod knock but it runs great, i drove it 100 miles tonight and it has not got any louder so there is no way it's a rod knock .. I don't think it's a piston rattle because it would be louder cold and get quiter when warm ..I wonder if it has something to do with the pair valve ?? Would you guys do me a favor and listen to your 14 and see if you hear anything? Just start it up in N and pull in the clutch and stick you ear to the gas tank and rev it slowly to 2000 or so.... Thanks ...

I would look at the apple or orange valve before you get to worried about it.

What are you looking for?

New motors get louder during break-in. This is not inexperience talking to you.

No experience riding the 14, but have you looked at the oil sight window for metallic debris? Usually the best time to look is turning off a hot motor, or having someone look in the window and watch for shinny particles as the hot engine idles, or a short blip every now and then.

You sure you're not hearing fuel injector noise, fuel pump cycling in the tank?

I'd have that oil filter dissected pronto, and check the oil pleats for crank bearing failure... you never know? Something I would do for peace of mind.

I just changed the break in oil and saw nothing that looked strange , but i will cut the filter apart and take a look .....Could be injectors or pump or some other item ... Thats why i asked for some of you guys to take a listen to their zx14s .... Come one guys it will only take a second of you time to take a listen ....

The smart ass replys are no help , you may think it's funny but it's NOT funny to me ...

We zx14 owners need to help each other when things like this pop up... We are the real testers of the new bike and ( IF) there are bugs or problems we need to know.. If it a normal sound we need to know that also....

I bet your hereing the emission valves on the top of the valve cover. They look like reed valves from a 2 stroke motor. I had a concours they were loud on. On my GPZ I disconnected them when i put the SS2R pipe on, for noise reasons. MY buddy has a 01 12r there loud on too.

Thanks 2toGo That could be it ...I took my long screw driver and put it to my hear and probed around the motor.. I could not pick up the noise on the bottom end .. I put it up by the head but didn't really hear anything .... I could not really get to the valve cover ...Thanks again....

I want to go to the track Wensday and run the bike but if i go and toss some parts i will never get it warrantied.....I have never had a dealer ever fix a little problem much less a blown motor.... I think warranties on bikes are worthless at best...

If it doesn't blow up i'm going to get the block off plates and get a loud pipe so i don't have it hear the damn noise ...

Too bad I'm not coming to clearwater anytime soon, I would listen to it with you!!!...I dont know anyone there that you can trust...

What RPM is the idle set at???...If you set it at 1200 there is no knocking...

When you let the clutch out does the knocking go away???...Every Kawasaki has clutch noise that you hear more from the top!!!...Sounds to me like the standard motor sounds herd with a stock pipe...

What track you going to Sunshine or Bradenton???

smokin - I believe I've got the same noise. I've noticed it since the first couple of hundred miles, and I generally only hear it while going slow-ish at low-to-idle rpm's. It's not loud, and it doesn't make any noticable noises while riding at speed. Your description sounds just like mine.

I thought about posting it up last week to see what the "guys" thought, but I was afraid I would get some of the same smart-ass comments that you have .

I'm not worried about that noise just yet. Some of the possible explanations above make sense, and I'm sure someone with a '14 and a lot of curiousity will dig deeper and find the true cause. I'm not sweatin' it just yet.

Going to go to Sunshine Wensday nite .. The noise is just easier to hear if you have the clutch pulled in , if you let the clutch it's get harder to hear it with the clutch making sounds .... Idle is set to just about 1000 but you can hear it from 1000 to about 2500 RPMs but after that everything get to loud to hear it .... Hope to see ya if you come to the track ....Smokin .... Look for the red zx14 lol... like there will be any other zx14 there lol ..

Thanks zermatt at least now i don't think i'm as crazy ...lol.... Your noise sounds and seem to act the same as mine ... It maybe nothing to worry about but i hate sounds and noises that i can't find a cause... If this a normal sound for the engine thats ok , i will just cover it up with a Muzzy pipe...

Good post, although sometimes the SA mails break me up. Hey SmokinZX the answers you've gotten are great. I feel pretty confident that the valves I thought heard are in fact the FI. My thinking is that in most cases you would only hear valves under loads. I'm hearing this noise idling, FI makes the most sense and no doubt over time the FI will get louder. I'm just guessing but at 400 miles I should not be hearing the valves this early or Kawasaki really has problems.

I hear some clutch related noise, fuel injectors, and possible some chain slap at slow speed 2000 rpm 1st gear.
Otherwise all is silent!

My oil filter was fuckin tight!

I am with dubious----I hear the clutch a little---click of the fi system and that about it. Except for low speeds when I hear the front disks. I will watch it closer---after all I only have 33 miles on mine. It seems to me that these are the type of thing we all want to know about the 14---board members should be able to post issues without hearing all the smart ass comments---lets try to help each other out. After all, the 14 is what brought us all here.

Yeah, probably FI click... hadn't thought of that. Adding a quality fuel rail damper at the factory would have added un-necessary weight to the bike, right?

Update === The sound is getting louder daily .Out of gear clutch pulled in you can hear it from Idle to about 2500 rpms and then back to Idle .You can hear the same sound coming to a slow stop from 2500 rpms down to idle. Sounds like a knock or a rapping sound...Bike runs great and no sounds above 2500 rpms ... I'm going to my Dealer Sat and have him take a look see..I will report back when i get some info...
