Rider is the key there. I love corners, but it's not Pilgrim's thing - just not what he normally does when going out for a ride I guess. I, on the other hand, don't really have that much fun unless I'm gettin' off the seat with a knee out on a regular basis...
My preference as well....as you can see by my Avatar...drag racing ain't for me...gimme twisties...gimme Deal's Gap...heading there in fact on the 12th of this month with the 14. Keep draggin the knees man!

Had a 94 gsx-r1100 which was retarded in the lower gears. The simple fix on that bike was to find the connector for the gear position switch and clip the "wheelie wire".

Your GSX didn't have gear position indication on the dash did it? I like that feature...

I'll be there. I'll be on a black 14, too, if it ever gets here.

...the black ZX-14s are POSs...too fat....to slow...too fugly...time to get rid of you black, fat, slow, and fugly pieces of shit....but as you well know, the bike depreciates at least 33% as soon as you sign the 'no cooling off' document and it leaves the dealership...so your selling price will be shockingly lower than you purchase price...even lower to ME now that it has been proven here on the internet and especially on bikeland.org that the black ZX-14s are not good at roll-on races...too bad, so sad...sell them now before the rest of us get a clue as to what a piece of shit the black ZX-14s are....and rememeber: the black ones are the most plentiful, not to mention the slowest of all the colors (or colours for you French Canucks), thus the easiest to sell and will bring in the lowest price unfortunately ...sell now...save yourself the agony...then go buy a litre bike of your choice...there are no bad modern-day litre bikes...get rid of your black ZX-14s...they're nothing but anchors...they'll drag you down and cause you to slip into despair...make you drink and take drugs....next thing you know you're shacking up with a crackhead ho under a bridge and mumbling to yourself about that damn stock black ZX-14 that lost a roll-on race to a pencilneck geek on his modded litre bike....oh the humanity!!!!...sell your black ZX-14s now!!!!....SAVE YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!

Matt, Im sure that Gixxer1000 had a gearing change...When you put a pipe on your 14 with a 16 tooth front sprocket, things will be different next time...Let us know!!!

Raven - I didn't run you. I guess you were beside the 'busa and pulled with us, I wasn't really paying attention. I remember you being there vaugely, but I didn't even know what gear you were in. We were in 6th and it sounded like you were not, or you have some serious gear mods going on. I'm sure you've also got a PC to go along with your pipe - so again, it's not even a contest.
Next time, our contests will be in the twisties. You guys might want to start practicing.

Ya -- even the Busa dudes admit that the 14 is not slow...it's that 3K TQ thing that's killing guys in the races...yesterday, I slipped the clutch at a light to about 3500 and let her go....fucking thing ripped away like a bat outta hell leaving tracks....what irks me, is why they wouldn't adjust the program to lower the TQ only in the lower gears and leave the higher ones alone at low RPM...they could easily have done this through the same software setup...that part makes no sense to me. You can tell that the engine really does make massive TQ in the lower range, more than a Busa, but that it's restricted through the engine management software. My guess is that due to demand, someone wil hack the engine mapping and offer a patch of sorts...hell...if someone pays me enough, I'll hand the project to my IT guys...:d

Exactly my thoughts in Matts experience ; thanks Crotchrocket. I happen to have my 10R geared -2 front +2 back sprocket. Results: tremendeous change getting sooner into the meaty part of the powerband...
It cured the too long first gear and it transformed the response for roll ons in any gear!...I bet the The gixxer had the gearing to enhance every day driving fun; can equally be done to a ZX-14... Simple mod....
(I don't have a need to go above 160 which is about what I would top off at high speed now...top speed is the only drawback.. 160 is not slow form the street and does not hurt my 1/4 mile so it works for me...)

Matt, 70 lbs is a LOT to give up no matter the bikes.
Heavier bike, heavier you - as someone said above it's power to weight bro.
Do some mods to that 14 and cut some weight off her and the tables start to turn (if the 14 exhaust is ANYTHING like all other Kaw factory exhausts its a pig weight-wise).
I own a '06 R1 and an '00 zx-12r and you notice two things right out of the gate with stock gearing:
1) How much harder the 12 pulls down low
2) How much better the R1 is in the curves
Different tools for different jobs. The 12 is a chainsaw the R1 is a scalpel.
I haven't ridden a 14 yet, but from what I've heard the motor is a jewel. Gear it right and lighten the load and there are going to be very few normally aspirated street bikes that will show you their tail lights.

I agree with othershere, it'a all power to weight. I would suspect though with me being just under 170 Lbs, I wont have much of a problem with the liter bikes once and if my 14 ever gets here. Agree, change the exhaust and drop it down 1 tooth in the front. That should make things exciting enough while saving 30 lbs or so. I did these mods to the blackbird I once owned and I could keep up with all 1000cc bikes at the time (early 2001). Still the 14 will have more power than the bird did so similar mods should still keep me right there with them, even those of today!

The power delivery of the 14 was purposely designed to not come on very hard below 5000 rpm. This makes for a manageable street experience for your average biker, but you need to be above 6k to get out of the TQ limiting software program.
This bike is going to need some good mods to cut it loose!

Agreed, and it IS way more manageble as a street bike this way...personally I wouldn't want to change it, but it would be nice to be able to so one could launch hard when they wished to...like a switch on the dash as someone had said here before...but I doubt that it's possible to do in that manner.

Hey Zermatt, We were actually running your race on the highway I thought, If you are planning on racing the 14 against the liter bikes in the twisties, I don't know much about it, but seems you would be at a bigger disadvantage to me. Raven will for sure race you that way, give him a try.
