MCN: Production to begin in less than one month
From MCN:
KAWASAKI ZZ-R1400
WE'RE just a couple ofweeks away from finally answering the question of how
much power the new Kawasaki ZZ-R1400 really makes. The firm is due to put the
new machine into production in less than a month, and the final fuel injection
specification must be decided before then. The engine is capable of well in excess
of 200bhp, according to Kawasaki insiders, but whether it is offered for sale tuned
to its full potential depends on an imminent decision from the firm.

trenace, in what ways do you think Kaw would "de-tune" the engine for final production? Would it just be engine management or some other way ie exhaust......? Just asking for opinions.

My opinion is totally inexpert as I have never had any involvement in such decisions. It does seem to me likely it would be things that do not require new parts, such as engine management (as you say) i.e. fueling and ignition timing, and cam timing (lobe centers.)
It's possible that they might have two or three potential specs of exhausts tuned to emphasize different parts of the rpm band and put off till the last minute which spec to pic, but that would seem a little unwise to me, as it would result in much wasted effort doing mapping for exhausts that will never be used. I'd tend to guess that they'd be decided enough on the exhaust much earlier on.
But truly I don't know and the above might be ignorant (well actually it is ignorant, lacking knowledge.)

I'm paying for a product that should be sold with it's "full potential", because I put my **** money down for it.
The parts can handle the power....They were built for it.
The human can handle the power... Man is an adaptable, and amazing species. When the Z-1 came out, you thought it was fast as all get-up. When the Busas came out, you though it was.....oh forget it...... "Speed is Relative." What part of speed don't you understand?
The (outstanding) engineers at Kawasaki R&D can go back to the drawing board. Because this 14 is played out to beat all comers. The competition is already working to beat you Kawasaki. Lock in the HP this time! Stop playing around with the deck of power, and pull the trump card out already. It will take a few years for (others to) catch-up, and you'll be ahead of the game....for now.
You want a "Busa Beater" or not Kawasaki? Give the bike all 200 PLUS!

Over 200 (rwhp) will blow my mind, that's hard to believe, but if true, I'd guess they would sell out all over the US in a couple months.

If they had BALLS it should have 200 RWHP. The it would go down as the most power to wieght production bike in history as I'm sure all the do gooders will end the HP war on street MC's!

You can stop yelling now.
And the agreement was for top speed, not horsepower.
It could have 250 hp and still be restricted to 186.

Even at 190 RWHP that still puts the bike at just 3 lbs per hp.
My 10 with an air filter and slip on at 156 RWHP is at 2.7 lbs per hp.
Both figures are based on full wet weights (I'm assuming 580 lbs for the 14).

Kawasaki have official specs now posted on the official Kawasaki CH (Swiss) as 192 crank hp and 110lb/ft crank torque. Weight is 217kg. Only over 200hp with ram air.
