Rob: With the concerted efforts of manufacturers to reduce size and weight of every component, what are the benefits of increasing the size of the clutch?

Well for one it would help prevent sliping 'IF' indeed this bike puts out more trq. Also while I'm not sure which year model it was but didn't the ZX-12R have some problems with the clutch self destructing? A buddy I used to ride with had the clutch on his 01' ZX-12R (it was green) fail twice in the first year, though he did ride/launch his bike pretty hard alot.

The benefits? Lol, The benefits of having a larger clutch is increased power handling and wearability. The ZX12R clutch while having a lot of plates is still too small for the power output. If it were the same as a ZX11 clutch then that would be a good clutch. The ZX11 has a much better clutch set up than the ZX12R ever thought about.. The plates are larger diameter and the steels are much thicker as well..

Looked at a 14 when I was at KMC. The benefits of the increased clutch diameter are to handle more torque and horsepower.

HEY Rob! Ya thinkin about runnin an NHRA ZX14? Or will the rules still favor the V twin Harley situation. That class needs more variety IMHO after being at Pomona. 1 Kaw, a bunch of Suzuki's and now the dominant V Twins.?
They need some serious rule changes to attract more competition and brands.

Depending on the particular V-Twin motor, the limit is 160 cubic inches (2621 cc) or 200 cubic inches ((2950 cc).

Versus I think 92 cubic inches for Fours (1508 cc).

However, for 2006, Suzuki -- but not Kawasaki -- will be allowed to go to 1,655cc. Whoopdie-doo!!

physics dictate that a smaller diameter clutch will
spin up & accelerate faster than a larger diameter

with multi plates addl plates help to an extent
a lot of deference is given to the overall markey
of everyday riders
NOT the various & minute performance riders

otherwise performance set ups like those by
porsche.... ferrari & even many nascar teams would prevail
Except ......!!!!!!!!!!
they would have little favor with the overall market
the everyday rider tyhgat likes the eaase & convenience
provided by an already sorted out existing system

Yes, we all know, it's thoroughly established, that for a two-cylinder motor to match up fairly with a four-cylinder, the two-cylinder needs almost twice the displacement, e.g. 160 ci vs 87 ci.
