What ways to lighten up the ZX-14
The ZX-14 is the first bike that I think might actually fit my frame. I like the weight and looks of the zx-10 but the new liter bikes are way too small and I look funny sitting on one. Now obviously the zx-14 wasn't designed to turn corners but the more I look at the new zx-14 the more I like it. There's a few cosmetic changes I'll make, such as a cutting off the big ass rear fender and installing a undertail, maybe a hugger too. Anyways my primary concern is to cut weight. I'll never be able to get the dry weight down to a zx-10 but I would like to carve say 50lbs off. After looking at the pics I think a titanium pipe with carbon fiber canister will lop off a good chunk. Then maybe some after market wheels, although the stock ones look pretty lean. Of course unnecesary brakets will be removed. Any other ideas, ones with'in reason $.

Well, here are some values and estimates for the 12, perhaps some will carry over to the 14 while others, such as wheels, may be less savings for the 14 due to being lighter stock if they are;
BST Front wheel - about 14 lb saved counting ceramic rotors, AP calipers, aluminum wheel spacers, Ti hardware, front fender
BST Rear wheel - about 14 lb, same though a standard type rotor and Discaciatti caliper, Stealth "tri-metal" sprocket
Swingarm plus lighter caliper hanger - 5 lb?
Penske rear shock with Ti spring - supposedly 5 lb
Battery: 8 lb (LiPoly, has to be charged while parked) -- you would probably not find this practical
Fuel tank - 10 lb
Various Ti and aluminum hardware - 3 lb (not much bang for the buck there)
Headlights - 3 lb (very small HID units I'll be mounting under the nose of race cowl) (you might not want to do that)
Upper CF cowl - 2 lb
Tailpiece (combined CF tail/seat unit from A-tech) - 4 lb?
Rearsets - 1 lb
Passenger pegs - 0.5 lb
Exhaust - 12 lb
Subframe lightening - 4 lb? Maybe 5 with having new one made
Lighter crank - 2 lb
Lighter clutch plates - 1 lb
Remove clutch sound deadening - 2 lb
Lighter mirrors - 1 lb
Removed turn signals - 1 lb
Removed tool tray, tools etc - 2 lb
Lighter pistons and conrods - 1 lb
Lighter kickstand - 0.5 lb
Lighter tires - 2 lb
Totals about 90 lb for the 12, but some of those items you'd probably not want to do or may not offer as much savings in the 14's case.

The one I sat on in Daytona don't need much help. It felt VERY light. This isn't a road racer so ,for ME, it's just fine. It already has the lighter wheels etc... the center of gravity is low . I wouldn't sweat it.

Besides the usual removal of fender and reflectors, I dunno how much you'd really want to take offa this thing anyway.
My thinkin is remove the cats and install lighter muffler(s).
Projector beam lights are all pretty lightweight anyway, the wheels are prolly bout as light as they can be and still be DOT approved.
Hopefully this thing will be like the 10 is - stick the key in it and ride.

It is very possible though that there's a ton to be saved in the exhaust, perhaps around 20 lb even given the dual cans.
Until the curb weight is published, we really will have no idea what the situation is. If it's about as heavy as the 12 already, then likely about as much weight can be taken off... if it's already considerably lighter, then there will be less remaining to take off. Most likely it can be gotten fairly close to the weight of a lightened Twelve once the exhaust is taken care of -- even if the crank is heavier that would not be by more than a couple of pounds and there is no reason the bodywork is necessarily heavier.

Great info. Didn't think there was that much weight you could par off. You're right about some of the mods...they just aren't practical.
Here's one of the pics of my old lady I posted on another board.
