Either will work. Is your stock spring already set on maximum?
The linkages (dog bones)are easy to make/have made, and the cheapest option, but don't get too radical as you may have chain run issues.
Another alternative might be to make a sleeve that goes on the bottom of the existing shock mount so that you can put in an additional location for the linkage. This would probably only cost the same as having a pair of linkages made, and would be lighter and easier to fit. I could draw something up if you like.

I'd like that.... yes the spring is at max adjustment right now... what kind of metal/specs should the bones be made from? they dont need to be "bone shaped" do they? if not I could just cut out a couple 'cept I dont know what material to choose... making a sleeve is something I had not thought of and would prolly be the best option as it would have the least effect on the suspension's rate etc? (yes no?)

I've never met FA, but your suggestion may indeed be the best one.
I'll have a look at the sleeve idea tonight.
You're right, links don't need to be dog bone shaped, it just makes them lighter and more attractive (If you like that sort of thing)
Aluminum 6061T6, or a medium strength steel would be fine.

I know at least 2 guys who've changed the rear spring on their DR650s and they both say it transforms the bike. 1 of the guys is an accomplished Trials rider and the other hasnt met a trail he won't try at least once!!
Apparently the stock shock is fine and needs not to be replaced. Unless of course it has a zillion miles on it.
Go to the web site MalomS posted and ask Tom, he's one of the DR owners and at one time must've weighed around 270 but he's lost about 50 pounds now.
Alternatively, go to the GVMC clubhouse next Tuesday and poke around for Tom, Ted or Vern. I believe (not sure) Vern did the same mod. They all have aftermarket tanks on their DRs also and Ted has so many contacts, within 3 days of me saying I needed a bash plate and used tank...........voila! $200 for the lot!
you didnt hear this from me but rumour has it that the Dual Sport guys in the GVMC may start their own club. Mexico anyone?

I looked at what would need to be done to make an extension sleeve for the shock. It is possible but would need to be machined and relieved to clear the lug on the swingarm. You would also need to shave about 5mm of the bottom of the shock fork to clear the new bolt location. It is doable though.
If you make new links, dont make the hole spacing any less than 10mm shorter than the original. You can get the material you need from Metal Supermarkets in Port Kells. Drill the holes with the links clamped together as a pair so that the distance is identical in both. If you do it yourself it will only cost about $10 for the material.
!! Don't use thinner material than the originals !!

Remember, these are critical components. Edges must be smooth, holes clean, round, and a good fit on the bolts - so that you don't get fatigue fractures.
It is a cheap, relatively easy job, but you do it at your own risk.
Also - stronger springs http://www.koubalink.com/dr650adapters.html
