KTM 520 MXC

I am looking at a new 2002 520 MXC anyone have any input on that. I ride a CR250 right now, primarily it is a trailbike/playbike for me. I don't know much about KTM

Butt loads of torque. Killer bottom end. They don't have the over rev of a 426 or 450. But for most mortals the KTM is more machine than most will ever get close to mastering.

If you are buying new I would look at the electric start version as starting a big bore 4 stroke is nothing like starting your CR. For the most part I think you will find the KTM more tolerant and fun then the CR in the woods.

The nice thing about the KTM is it comes with pretty much everything on it. Where as Japanese bikes you buy them and then order up the accessories! One thing you might check on is what KTM calls for for service. I.E. how many hours begore they say you need a piston, rings etc. The service manual should give you that info. And a dealer should be able to tell you if it is realistic. Sometimes KTM parts can get out of hand for cost.

Well, I work as a mechanic so the only prob. with tight service intervals is that I am usually sick of workin' on stuff by the end of the day. I am tempted to go check out the new XR650r's. I know all IT will need is oil and gas. I have heard of a few problems with cam bearings on KTM's. My plan is to get a plate on it so when I'm riding over in Cle-Elum the Rangers won't nail me for riding on the Logging roads.

The Honda manual refers to the starter as the "Operator"!

Do you know that I found out , Washington State is the only state in the union that does not allow dirtbikes to be made street legal...No matter what you do! I want a four stroke that is street legal but will be tailored 90% for the dirt. Screw it I'll have to move to Oregon.

Actually, what many of the guys do is get the bike licensed in Montana or Idaho. Pretty common and apparently fairly simple.

Wouldn't you need to live there or at least have an address there?

I know three or four guys here in Washington that have done this. I believe they have had used a friends address. But not sure. It might be worth a telephone call to a small town Montana Motorcycle dealer

As a contractor I can relate. This is the worst time of the year. Work is slow, the work we have is being done in bad weather at a higher cost, Insurance rates are going up as usual, Taxes are due in a month, and oh yeah its Christmas!

TAXES!!!!! I HATE TAXES!!! I own my own business also and I can't get the Dep. of Revenue off my back. You get a little behind and they act like you are making them go broke.

Is this off topic? O.K for the dirt zone? I don't want to get yelled at. Nobody really uses this section anyway I guess.

A piece of advice..... Even with a plate the cops can bust you. My experience has been that they pull you over and write you a nasty fix it ticket. So if you really are going to ride it on the road at all at least take the time to put on a single mirror and a horn. I have found the simple old fashion rubber squishy honk honk horn works and is acceptable. And of course the brake light is an issue you will have to over come. If you want to just look the part a simple on off switch to the red double filiment tail light. If you do those things you can talk your way out of a ticket. I have been followed home, back to camp etc. by more then one cop!

It's kind of backwards but I know someone at the DMV and my bike came from Canada so the title did not say "for off road use only" I am now going to order the lights, rear extended fender folding mirrors,Arooooga horn etc.

Actually at this moment I am at an all time low. In the reloading zone. I have only my ZX12, a 1800 Goldwing, a Zuma and picking up a Yamaha 660 Raptor. Trying to make my mind up on the next 4-stroke. I want a moto-crosser with electric start.

I plan on running an SV650 for next years racing.

I have an XR650R on the road as my year round bike. The thing is a blast to ride and dead reliable. Quite often starts on the first kick even in sub-zero temps!

Sucks for any distance on the highway.
