"Vaillant Extends Championship Lead
With Another Sweep at Deming Speedway"
Kiel Vaillant, driving the Air Liquide' Mini Sprint rebounds from a disappointing Hannegan weekend to take his sixth win and third clean sweep victory at Deming Speedway this past Friday, 30 August, 02. Brock Lemley of Bellingham, second in the NMSA Championship had put three wins together and was closing the points chase with only five races remaining. The two have been locked in a battle most of the season but it was Vaillant showing the way moving from his fourth starting spot to take the lead at the races midway point.
Vaillant would start the night qualifying his Kawasaki ZX-12R powered Bishop chassis with a time of 10.89 sec., some 2/10ths quicker than his next competitor. The 8 lap heat race victory would set the stage for 25 lap "A" Main shootout. With the top four cars inverted Kiel would need a great start from the second row to keep pole sitter Lemley close in view. At the drop of the green Kiel managed too tuck in behind Lemley coming out of turn two. Travis Rutz clipped the wall on lap two to bring out the yellow and regroup the field. Following the restart the two battled hi and low with Vaillant very strong and challenging around the bottom. Entering turn one Lemley slid hi and opened the door for Vaillant to take the lead as the two headed down the back stretch. Following another yellow Vaillant was able to extend his lead but Lemley would close the gap as the two came upon the tale of the 14 car field. As the laps counted down it was Vaillant able to take advantage of traffic, stretching his lead and capturing the victory when the checkered flew.
The win extends Vaillant's points lead to a more comfortable 101 points with only the four races remaining at Deming Speedway. "It feels great to be back in the winners circle again," said Kiel, " we've been in a bit of a slump since Clay Cup".
During the "Northwest Clay Cup Nationals" in July, Kiel was leading and poised for his second Nationals win when a tire bleeder valve failed forcing a trip to the pits. He would rejoin the tail of the field and work his way back to finish a disappointing sixth. With only two top three finishes in their last five races the VF Motorsports team has seen their points lead shrinking. Returning to Hannegan Speedway where Kiel had dominated and won the two previous races on the large 1/4 mile in June and July the team was hoping for a third to clinch the tracks Championship, but it was not to be. The frustration would continue as they were unable to start the "A" Main feature due to a later discovered faulty ignition switch. "Everyone has bad luck sometime during the season and I guess it was our turn this last while. We just kept working hard to get through it and hopefully things have now turned around" said crew chief and father Kirk Vaillant.
