Buddy went down

My buddy Bryant (and future employee (again)) went down Nov. 2nd.

They've written him off as "too much damage" and other names for a lost cause - but he keeps surprising us with hand movements, tears, coughing, and so on.

He had a R1, but moved down to a HD - which he loved to impersonate "indian larry" for miles at a time. I warned him that I didn't much care to ride with him doing shit like that....so he refrained with me. He is extremely good at it the trick of standing on the seat, arms out like Jesus on the cross.

Dustin and Bryant have been taking suppliments to help them "bulk up". I just rolled my eyese at him when he told me. They took NanoX9? (the suppliment crap), lifted, had lunch and went for a ride. They started out of Rapid City SD on HWY 44. Dustin said Bryant stood on his seat by the fish hatchery, and started riding up the hill just fine, rounding corners. In a straight stretch he said Bryant's arms went limp, and fell over like a tree in the woods. The bike went straight as an arrow into a cable guard rail.

Bryant's scull was crushed on the RH side, along with his eye socket and cheek.

I got a call, so I went with about 50 of his friends and family to the Hosp ICU waiting room. After his first surgery, they told them there was too much damage - his stepdad relayed the message to us all, in tears, barely able to speak.

Since then he has recovered some, but now they say part of his brain is dying, and his stem is starting to swell. Last night they gave us the impression that things were all shitty again, and all he had was involuntary mucle actions left. Today he coughed! so maybe just maybe.......although I'd hate to see him come back as a pudding head.

This is the hardest thing I've dealt with. I quit the company I hired him for - and he wanted to come work with me again - but I couldn't afford him. December was when he could come aboard - and he was excited. There was a company truck, and new responsibilities waiting there. Now............I know our chances for the lifestyle he dreamed of are dim.

For a 22 Year old kid with a troubled youth - he was making headway to become a real man. He sold his trailer house, moved in with his dad (who raised him by himself) planning on saving $$$ for a real house with a garage - so he could tinker with his bikes. 650 twin flat tracker, his HD, and he wanted another R1 again, along with a 2 stroke Dbike.

I'm absolutely PISSED about this suppliment bullshit. His lifting friends got him into this shit, and I'd love to piss pound there dumb asses.

No, he wasn't wearing a helmet. Since I left the company, and wasn't in the pickup with him 3 hours a day - there wasn't anyone there pointing out the stupid in his young lifestyle.

So, I'd hope no one is on that stupid shit. I could only imagine passing out on the way home from the Gym. Killing 6 people with your SUV as you strike a Minivan loaded for soccer practice.

Sounds like he's already gone. RIP to a young riders carefree life, cuz even if he somehow partially recovers he will never be the same. Don't even feel partially responsible his accident. I've been in your shoes and had friends die where if they had just listened to me, or done what I told them.... Most people just don't listen. And the ones that do, usually don't ride bikes. "We" are the stubborn ones, and the stubborn ones will always be drawn to motorcycling because it fits like a glove to our personalities. Most of us eventually learn whats stupid or not, what we 'could do' versus what we are actually 'going to do'.

Oh yeah, thats also the definition of learning stuff the Hard Way. So there is nothing you could have done, his life was in his hands, and you just know that before that stroke or whatever that caused him to pass out, he was feeling that post work out satisfaction (like a drug to those who have never worked out), feeling free and happy and EXACTLY where he wanted to be doing EXACTLY what he wanted. Wish we all could go out that way.

RIP Rider
I am so sorry for your loss. Sad story, terrible accident, and as Sticks has said even if he survives he will not be the man you new.
We do what we want, we take our chances, I blame no one for the choices I make.
Grief is a process my friend. Give yourself some time. Learn about the stages of grief. Denial, anger, blame, guilt, bargaining, all necessary to get to a place of acceptance where you may eventually find solace and peace.

His dad is trying to get power of attorney, only breathing 20% on his own yesterday. I didn't know they put him on a ventilator........ fuck that. This is pretty hard to deal with.

Wedrivers...try not to give up hope, I have seen a recovery that the doctors had all but written off. He had to have part of his brain removed after a similar fall.

It took a year of recovery, but he came back almost as good.... No better. than before.

Well, he was a bit of a prick before. It seems as though they took that part of him. He is much more mellow now..

His wife likes him better now than before... but she can not resist call him her other 1st husband

Sorry for your loss, I know it is tough to deal with. So, are you saying the supplements caused this? sounds like LAWYER time! Makes me a little nervous, I take some supplements, not that one but N.O. Explode and Cell Mass and Nitrix. I have never felt like I would pass out but he probably did not either.

His dad goes to court tomorrow.

Hard choice. Do we let his body build up to breathing on its own, just to be spoon fed by his mother? Or do we look at the facts. Or do we wait for the swelling to come down in the brainstem?

Damn.

What you do is put it in the lords hands and he will take care of it. It is so hard to understand why life deals us some of the crap that it does but so often we are powerless to change a situation. One of my dear friends lost a son that was street sufing on top of a chevy and lost his balance, no supplement involved. He was getting better and we were all so hopeful and then in the blink of an eye he took a turn for the worse and was gone. I will pray for ya'll. It is the only thing I know to do and I am so sorry for your loss and the tragedy that you have had to live through. I hope I die on a bike I have seen to many people wither away slowly with illness and disease. Time will make it easier stay busy.

Brenda you really need to start taking responsibility for lifes hard choices. When you 'put it in the lords hands' that means you are making a decision to NOT make a decision, which is usually the WRONG decision. What he is faced with is letting nature (god?) take its normal course and reclaim the life that was given him. Or to let modern science keep his body alive even when it cant even breath on its own any more. According to Wedrivezs there is a remote chance, apparently, that he could somewhat recover to a walking vegetable state.

Which makes all the hyperbole and boasts of 'what I would do if that ever happened to me...' come home to roost.

Personally, as a man whose made too damn many of those kinda choices in life, I say throw out all your preconcieved notions and completely dismiss any idea or belief you might have held before confronted with this issue. Only by starting from a clean slate can you make a decision that you can live with!! However, go into this decision with anything less than a clean slate and it will eat at you for the rest of your life.

The right decision is for you to decide, and done properly will leave you at peace with it in the future. We can only offer you a hand on the shoulder and ear to listen.

So sad. Hang in there.

We sure can make some dumb decisions and pay for them dearly. Fortunately the helmet law helps in CA. But it doesn't prevent riders from pushing their limits.

A kid die last weekend on the mountain road where I live and ride every week. Large group , goin' way too fast. Nasty crashes happen here every weekend, sometime 2 or 3, a death every couple of months. A lot due to people making bad decisions.

Sure, a prayer or two may help but in the end it is our choice.

Ride safe. Keep the shiny side up.
