Don't even go there Jeff! I've seen that kind of thing happen in person before. Hell, I've nearly done it myself a few times.
The guy behind was resigned to not passing and was just following his lead, keying off the guys lines and braking points ahead of him.
After a while your mind just assumes he's going to keep doing exactly what he's supposed to and you go into autopilot mode. Then when he does something unexpected it takes WAAAYYY to long for your mind to kick over into full conscious have-to-evade-and-pick-a-new-line or I crash mode. Yes, even during a race that could happen apparently, because if he was NOT autopiloting he would have immediately pounced on his opponents missfortune and passed him quickly.
