Once it picks up a suction and flows, opening the cap won't do anything.I'ld look at the cap to make sure the vent is working to stop the siphon before it begins.

first thing first: your vent line is supposed to be open to the tank right next to the gas cap. On dirt bikes it is literally IN the gas cap (the rubber hose you route down by your forks). Should not be possible for gas to come out unless the tank is completely full. You must have it hooked to the return or supply line to the carbs. (it is carbs, right?). Dont know how the 954 tank setup is, but most have the vent line a hard line that ends about the center of the tank where the seat meets it, where your rubber line hooks up to it.
Good luck

Bikes too new for this, but just maybe... if your vent line is routed internally to the top of the tank, it could have gotten corroded through. Long shot though.
