I have no idea how much it cost to run a site.. But could he not make more money in the long run rather than one lump some?
I rather make a little money for a long time than a lot of money for a short time..

i have heard numerous complaints of the corporate bulshit that ensues on kawiforums.. i'm on there as well, and tho sme may not condone this, i like to post links to manuals if someone needs them.. they cited me with an infraction point for posting copyrighted material once for a 7-R manual link..
i'm sure a few on here may say good, but when you're poor white trash like myself, or don't happen to have $50-$120 for a decent manual, a little hook-up is grand.
that being said, a new forum i helped start was the refuge point for many a kf'er.... this site (formerly kmf, now kawitalk..) was then shortly sold out from under the core members without notice. the core members and i now head up kawispeed, and now THIS one is becoming the refuge..
i do not condone kawitalk at all. they are ridiculous there..
any way.. i hate the fact of coporation-owned forums. they put those stupid ass ads ineverywhere, the filter EVERYTHING, and it just becomes a propaganda machine.
private-owned forums are the shit.. you get a better bond with people, better service on techniocal problems.. better answers, and no ones trying tomake you buy something every second.

Fish, I'm glad that you plan to keep the site as it is. So many sites run by people who knows sh..t about motorbikes and their target is only to make money or sell crap.
Best Regards & keep up the good work.

Just wondering Fish, assuming you already had a site such as the ones in question here like kawiforums etc.., how much maintenance is actually required? Time wise and money wise, is owning a busy forum worthwhile?
Because all these guys selling out must have been fedup with it. I just cant imagine so many independent minded people selling there baby out to a giant corporation unless they were just fedup with the long hours and little or no income to pay for it.

Sticks, this company owns Motorcycle.com (they own kaw, honda, yamaha and a host of other forums they purchased)
We are often asked why web entrepreneurs sell their businesses to VerticalScope. Some of the most common reasons include:
Unlocking Value
Often, enthusiasts start a website or online community in their spare time or after work. After years of work, the founder may want to move on to another venture and be rewarded for the countless hours of hard work they invested into their site. As one of the few companies that actively acquires enthusiast-run websites, VerticalScope is often the ideal partner - we are a nimble, enthusiast-run business ourselves, and have the ability to close a transaction for a website in as little as 24 hours.
Change of Interest
Many times, we purchase online communities from owners who were once passionate about their site's subject matter, but have since lost interest. They want to ensure that their website is in the capable hands of an enthusiast-run business that can keep their community thriving. VerticalScope can provide an exit opportunity to these owners and ensure their communities are well looked after.
Difficulty Managing Growth
We often see enthusiast-started websites and message boards that have become so popular that the technical, operational, and financial resources required to effectively run the community may be beyond the means of the owner. Big communities require a significant investment in server infrastructure, bandwidth, backup, software, administration, and other technical resources. This does not include the difficulty enthusiasts often have monetizing their website to pay for the massive investment required to keep their site a going concern. VerticalScope has acquired many such websites that have benefited from our significant resources, expertise, and like-minded enthusiast interest in the subject matter.
These are just a few of the reasons site owners choose to talk to VerticalScope about acquiring their websites. Other reasons have included everything from partnership issues forcing the sale of a community, or simply the desire to retire. Whatever the case may be, VerticalScope has proven through many successful transactions that we will be not only good stewards for your enthusiast-oriented website, but that we can add significant value to the user experience through improvements in technology and faster servers.

I can guarantee you that the pricetag for Bikeland would be set so astronomically high that they would be unable to purchase it.

I wouldnt think the other sites would sell out, 80,000+ members takes a while to achieve, but when $250,000+ is offered its makes you think.

Fish...What if they offered you a Billion...and then you could just start a new site and give us all a heads up...the smackhouse alone is worth a billion just for its potential for use as a cultural study in freedom of speech.
