would you rather get socks or a '72 RD-250 for Xmas A friend of mine just got a '72 Yamaha RD-250 for christmas from his wife. Single owner, only 14,000 miles, been sitting in some old guys basement for the last 20 years. Chrome exhaust and fenders don't even look like they have any rust on them. I think she paid $150 for it.
I heard those engines wore out pretty fast. Any one have any idea how many miles you can get out of one these on average? 15K, 25k, 50k?
If it was me I'd part it out or sell it and buy myself something nice. My friend feels that becasue it was a gift he has to restroe it and ride it. Of course if you have to rebuild an engine I can't think of anything easier than an air cooled two stroke except maybe one that wasn't 35 years old :P
BTW the best part of this story is constantly reminding my wife that my friend's wife got him a bike for xmas.

restoring it could be a bunch of work... I owned an RZ350 and my friend had an RZ500 .. yep.. they wore out but they were fun... now you're bringing back memories of how excited we were when we could finally buy BelRay "Smokeless" 2 stroke oil! That was cool!

Your friend is correct in loving it..
The old two-strokes were bullet-proof with a little TLC. Almost all have become very collectible.
I had a buddy back in the day that had a cherry RD400 and that bike flat got up and hauled ass for a 400 cc motor. Very good handler for it's day, too.

...a buddy always smoked by me in the twisties on his green RD400, literally ...me?...I was riding my bad-ass Z-1B...we'd trade off and I'd smoke his ass in the twisties, too ...neat bikes back in the day (c.1976) ____________ “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men

I had a 1972 R5 350
They are not too bad, restoration wise. No power valves, no reed valves, just piston ports and an oil pump that can cause some trouble with set up. Or disconnect it and run pre mix. Just don't chop the throttle on long down hills, with pre mix, No gas = no oil.
