Why would it be gummed up? It has less than 1000 miles, and I ALWAYS cooled it off before shutdown and cranked it a bit before using the accelerator pump as the poor man's choke. It had a fairly tight bearing when new . . .

Ran out to Missoula and picked up a running NA KZ1300. It's the reference bike so I can take the turbo bike COMPLETELY apart if I want to and have a guide to putting it back together. Gotta tell you, I don't think I've ridden *anything* smoother. Including a new Gold Wing. A ton of torque, very stable at any speed I wanted to go. The perfect bike for taking the gf for a ride, imho.

BTW - this bike is heavy. No, actually, this bike is FUCKING HEAVY!!!
Dry weight is 655 lbs. DRY WEIGHT!!!
With a 6.5 gallon tank, 5 qts of oil, a half qt of rear end fluid, a gal or so of coolant...Baby's gotta come in well over 700 lbs wet.

That looks identical to my 1980 I had back in '83. Your red one looked just like it when I got it if you covered it with lots of rust and shit. They are VERY smooth as you have noticed and VERY thirsty pigs, I recall about 26 mpg average with my stock 1980. Looks like you have LOTS of spare parts there except the cylinder which isn't bored to 1392 like on the red one. Like that 85 mph speedo?
Looks like you bought one nice old bike!

Hmm...Think I'm doing closer to 40. Put 120 miles on it running around and burned 3 gals. Reset the odo and will check it again. Not really an item of concern in any case.

Umm...NO!! Then again, taking this thing faster than 85 is like putting a hemi starter motor in your grandma's wheelchair... ____________

My stock 1980 would top out at approx. 142 with an aftermarket full fairing. The turbo would cruise at 150+ at ZERO boost and pull like a scalded cat when the throttle was snapped open. I had it to about 170, as read by the tach, but I never had the nerve to exceed the redline by as much as the Mr. Turbo guys to go to 190+. You could get a rear gear set from a 1300 Voyager for some higher gearing . . .

The faster you go on this bike, the smoother it gets! ZERO vibration in the 4-5K range. Funny how all these different Kawis I've had over the years, GPz, ZX, ZZR, all ran around 70mph at 4k rpm. I did take it to about 90mph across the I90 bridge (gotta love that empty carpool bridge) last week.

Picked up a bucket of carb cleaner today, gonna soak the carb for *AWHILE* to see if I can get it working. Doesn't seem to be filling the float bowl at all, so gotta see what's gummed up. Have already taken it apart and blown out everything I could get to with carb cleaner, so this is the next step.

As I recall, it has a 120 degree crank which makes for perfect primary balance . . . they are the sewing machine of motorcycles, SMOOTH as silk. The only engine that I've ever seen with that kind of smoothness and linear powerband resides in that little white car with the "imitation" Foreman grills.

Can't 'cuse the cylinders need to be divisable by 3 (120 x 3 =360 degrees). Inline 4 cylinder 4 strokes would have a 180 degree crank.

duh. didnt realize the KZ was a 3cyl.
so does this mean triumphs are super smooth? i've never had that impression (never ridden one either).

No it's a 6 cylinder but a 120 degree crank can be used in 3 cylinders, but 2 stroke only, or a 6 cylinder 4 stroke.

Stalwart - hmm...I will have to look and see what the firing order on my Triumph ST is...It's a 3 cylinder!

Thinking about 120 degree order...That makes sense for the KZ. You've got a compression stroke and an exhaust stroke happening at the same time, or conversely, power stroke and intake stroke....

You got it, imagine a straight 8 with a 90 degree crank . . . Some of my military vehicles have RR I-8 engines and they idle SMOOTHLY at 300 rpm and make almost no vibration at any rpm.
