1979 KZ1300 Turbo

Picked up my winter project!

The bike was in storage for quite a while, and unfortunately, the roof leaked. Ah well, that just makes it a real project!

My plans:

Functionality: replace fluids, gaskets, cables as required. Flush the fuel system, rebuild the carb.

Appearance: pull the exhaust, clean and ceramic coat. Clean and repaint engine cases.

Pull wheels, clean and inspect bearings (should be ok not that high of mileage).

Is this going to be a frame up resto? Dunno at this point.

Overall, the bike is in great shape. Most of the work is cosmetic, and I'm hoping that, with the fluids replaced, a new intake gasket and a fresh battery in it, I can get it fired today. That will let me check out the turbo. I anticipate it'll be spring before the wheels roll again. Will need a suspension rebuild, brake rebuild first. And the clutch will need work.

Cool bike. They had weak cranks didn't they?

Hi Harry,

Not sure! This one has stood up to 26 lbs of boost, so you tell me!

Today was tear down day.

Pulled the seat, tank and turbo exhaust off to get to things. Replaced the battery, changed the oil and filter, and lubed up the throttle and clutch cables. Bled the brakes (bone dry, tiny tumbleweeds rolling around in the reservoir!) and got the front brakes to come back pretty solid. All this is just preliminary flushes and checks, there will be a second round of fluid flushes and checks.

Things to do:

Flush and fill radiator, check for leaks.
Flush and fill water injection tank, check for leaks
Get that gas tank treatment for rust, flush, fill, check for leaks.
Engine rolls over (jumped the starter solenoid). No clunk clunk sounds! Will change oil and filter a second time after initial fire and run.

The good part is that there's a lot of NOS stock available on the internet. I can get any cover or gasket set I need. Heck, even the local dealership still had the oil filters.

What it looks like now:

Keep that puppy charging!

Always bag and tag!

I was thinking about getting one when i was stationed in england (quite a few years ago) but was advised not to as i was told the cranks were weak. If that bike was holding up to boost what i was told must be bullshit.
I was looking at all the kawasaki 2 strokes when i was on the isle of mann. 250,500 &750cc's all triples.
I love the way 6 cylinder bikes sound. Had a benelli 6 pass by several times at glen helen IOM

It *is* a plain bearing crank...So oil flow is critical, ya know?

Stalwart is mailing me the key, once I get that I'll check out the ignition. These boogers are known for really weak coils, so I'm anticipating a fresh set.

You know it guys! I cranked it long enough to turn off the oil light today when I got home. Gonna run out tomorrow morning and get some new gas line for it. Might hear this puppy fire up tomorrow.

Well, I got impatient and went out and got the hose tonite. No such luck on getting it fired. The carb is gonna have to come off for a rebuild, no doubt. Then it's the turbo. Doesn't spin all that freely, but no funky rubs or anything...How freely should it spin?

Talked with Stalwart, think I'm gonna go with fuel injection, ditch the snomobile carb...

Autronic makes a nice unit:

They have several models, the SMC is gonna do everything I need.

Dude that bike will have a RayJay FF40 turbo most likely. Two Words........Ditch it!!!! Get a garrett unit and you'll be a ton better off. It's a very old and out dated compressor by todays standards. It should spin free and have some shaft wobble to it, BUT not enough to rub either housing.

No shaft wobble, but sure doesn't spin freely. Question is, how much do I want to invest in this project? This could rapidly get silly. Then again, if getting it running is gonna be a couple grand, and a couple grand more gets it running *RIGHT* ... Well...

The unit has to have some wobble. The shaft floats in the bearing and the bearing floats in the center section. It's designed that way and when everything is floating properly it moves a little from side to side by your finger tips.

YES! It's easy to take apart and clean.................Impellar has a left thread on the compressor side. Use 12 point to hold shaft on the Turbin side and clean that bitch up. Bearing is just about 40 bucks. Or at least they use to be that. I probably still have a few bearings laying around here somehwere

Engine management is as good as the amount of cash you want to spend. There are many things to take into account. I retroed EFI on my zx11 turbo project. AND like I learned the hard way with my radios this past winter AGAIN! ECUs don't like dirty power around them and finding a good isolated spot to put one on a bike that wasn't designed for that in the first place can be very challenging. I would probably just stick with the carb or a nice easy cheap fun project could turn into a nightmare. Sort of keep the bike true to the era.

Very cool project and it definitely looks like you've got a good base to build on.

Thats a bike I don't know shit about, so I'm going to sit back and learn as you go.

Edit: BTW - cool dog.

Got the replacement starter solenoid in yesterday, replaced it, much better!

Really got tired of using a pair of pliers and jumping across the solenoids.

Next project is to replace the coils with some aftermarket units. They are known to be weak, and you can swap them out for some healthy accell units.

Picked up a couple sets of NGK plugs for it. When I get it to fire and run, will put a set of plugs through it, yank them, then adjust heat ranges as needed to compensate for rich/lean condition.
