Many FJR's are experiancing valve train problems.
The FJR is marginally quicker than the ST, but not by much.
The ST is smoother.

Time will tell if the GTR1400 is for real and where it fits.

Mine: ST1100- 200,400 miles and still going.

I bought it with 199,000 showing. It came with 2 3 ring binders of records and service manuals. The original owner kept all documentation form day 1.
The bike is on its 3rd clutch, numerous sets of tires and brake pads. Engine has had nothing other than normal service done to it other than the clutches. It runs like a swiss watch, no smoke, starts better than my ZX12R. Yes it is down on power a bit, but with 200k showing I didnt expect it to be a top performer, lol.
I'd suggest either the ST or the FJR, but I wouldnt get an FJR without a 5 yr warrantee, as the cylinder head problem is spendy.

OR wait and see if Kawi really does come through with the GTR1400

The ST is a nice and well proven machine, however, I would take the FJR any time. Perhaps 15+ years down the road I would be looking to mellow down and ride an ST.
Sure glad I am not there yet.

I took a good long close look at both of them sitting side by side at a dealership the other day. One important test for me is the 'laptop' test. The side bag has to be able to hold a laptop IN it's carrying case. FJR - No, ST - Yes.

swft, what size of laptop you tried? I'we got this huge turd HP w/ 17.0'' monitor, of course it would not fit. On a contrary, my other 14.1" VAIO should fit in both.

BTDT - made my choice.

ST1300 weighs about 100 pounds more and has about 15 HP less than FJR. FJR has more torque and better handling.

Bags are 'better' on the ST1300, but the bike looks plain weird without them. The FJR LOOKS like a sport bike and the boxes are big enough for helmets, but NOT for MY laptop case.

The '06 FJR supposedly has redesigned exhaust valves - the ticking problem's been resolved. Yamaha was paying for the repairs, even out of warranty.

Honda has the 3 year warranty, extensible to 7. Yamaha has the 1 year, extensible to 5 (in the US) for $385.

In the end I decided for sport over comfort. Have 3400 km on mine over 3 riding weeks and do not regret the choice.
