American motorists are bracing for another expensive summer
The Energy Information Association (EIA) reported that U.S. inventories of gasoline dropped 5.4 million barrels during the week ending March 24 -- the biggest decline in over two and a half years -- and just ahead of the peak vacation travel season when gas consumption typically increases significantly.
With rising fuel costs a growing concern, American consumers are finding new ways to save on gas. But they're not just considering four-wheeled alternatives.
According to a new survey by Nationwide Insurance, in conjunction with the American Motorcyclist Association, 35 percent of motorcyclists surveyed said they will ride their bikes more over the next year as a result of volatile fuel prices. (See full press release below).
Plus, as bikes become increasingly more cost-efficient and manufacturers are offering products for every type of riding need, enthusiasts are turning their hobby into an everyday form of transportation. Survey respondents reported they spent 26 percent of their total riding time last year commuting to work. In addition:
- The survey shows that both male and female motorcyclists expect to ride their bikes for approximately 22 more hours than they did in the past year.
- Male motorcyclists expect to ride 172 hours over the next year, while female riders expect to ride 146 hours.
- Motorcyclists also indicated they will pay $3 to $4 more per gallon before they stop riding.

...with some econoboxes (or whatever shape they come in) getting 45+mpg, its hard to believe that there'll be more motorcyclists on the roadways...
...lemme see: $15K will get you four wheels, all weather protection, all weather comfort, all weather audio entertainment, all weather luggage capacity, larger gas tank capacity, and your present driver's license will allow you to drive off the dealership's floor with no additional training...
...or $15K will get you two wheels, and less protection in all aspects of the above, less gas tank capacity, and you had better have some experience on public roadways on powered two wheels and your MC endorsement or you'll surely get severely injured in no time...or worse....
...will there be more new motorcyclists riding more motorcycles on the roadways as the result of higher gas prices?...only if they're not afraid of riding in traffic, are willing to learn how to ride properly, and want to have fun...

If gas goes up that much for "us" then "you" better be worrying too because the U.S. imports the majority of its crude from Canada, not the middle east.
41% the last time I checked.

Flexfuel is just a jerk job...Right now it's hard to find, cost more than regular unleaded gas and with flexfuel you get less miles per gallon
Why use flexfuel then???

Prices in the UK have just gone up by several percent. The reason given: ( don't know if this is true though ) the USA is just entering it's season of peak demand and since it is not producing enough oil to meet it's own needs, it is buying on the world market. This is forcing up prices.
By the way, we are paying the equivalent of nearly $6 per US gallon here in England.

bikes could get higher milage if they were slower , with less acceleration and a real big talllll top gear. I've got a radical corvette that gets 30mpg on the road but about 3 around town. Remember the Mobilette mopeds . 150mpg. ran like crap. premixed about a 1/2 gallon of fuel and ran all week. No reason you couldn't see a 200mpg bike if top speed was limited toabout 45mph. Drag goes up with velocity squared. that's where the cars have an advantage. Or we could ride streamliners.

My Z28 gets about 27 mpg on the highway with 3:23 rear gears. Back in the day I thought that was great milage. The C6 Vette is claiming 28 mpg not bad for over 400 hp. I don't know what a Z06 gets.

Think about this. CNN had an excellent special on the other night about this.
During the OPEC influenced gas shortage in the 70's, Brazil had the foresight (small country as it is) to realize this wasn't going to go away.
So they made a decision to become energy independent. And they have done a fabulous goal of meeting it. Ethanol from sugar cane (renewable) is the BTU generator of choice.
The most ironic part of the documentary was when the American journalist was driving down the road in an ethanol burning car through the cane fields of Brazil and asked "Here I am driving a Chevy in Brazil that doesn't have one drop of middle east oil in the tank. Why can't I do this in America?"
Good goddamn question I thought to myself.
