de-tweety my KLR
We've all heard that tweeting noise older KLRs with stock mufflers make.
I read somewhere (apologies to the original source, which I blatantly cut and pasted because I've too lazy to retype a paraphrased version) this could be remedied by taking the biggest straight-blade screwdriver you've got and opening the seam at the 6 o'clock position of the perforated pipe lining the exhaust, enlarging the seam opening as required until tweety dies. If opening this seam to within about an inch (2.54 cm) of the exhaust opening doesn't kill the chirp, then the same process is repeated at the 12 o'clock position. Some have reported that they have had to keep going at 90-degree intervals (3 and 9) to finally kill the bird.
Hmmm. Drive a screwdriver deep inside my bike's inner workings. Sounds like my kind of fix-it. Ironically, this would probably not be the worst thing I've done to this bike so far.
Anyone want to talk me into or out of this procedure? Any other suggestions beside the obvious (i.e. replacement of said exhaust with suitable aftermarket pipe).

A trick Lizard used for years ( and several bikes ) - remove the muffler .... loud as hell but it'll never tweety again .... and your neighbours will love you for it too ..... or you could try a Big Gun exhaust with the quiet core , pretty pricy but they sound real nice - probably need a jet kit too though

ha ha- I did that, for fun, while we had the pipe off to drill out and re-tap the stupid bolts that all three heads of broke off while we were trying to "clean the spark arrester" as recommended by Kawi shop manual (ps- don't bother- its 30 mins of my life I want back). Sounded awesome and I loved the look of backend sans pipe! Sorta stomps all over the suggested off-road 96 Db sound limit though....

"open headers" is exactly what u did there spam, remove the muffler.
i ran the 12R like that for a month or so and it actualyl worked better than i expected, but it didnt start great and was wimpy below 6k rpm. still beter than my old datsun 240 tho. that thing could barely get going from a light it ran so shitty. once it fit 3 or 4k tho, it kicked butt (and made me deaf)
