EPA/Aftermarket Exhaust Rumors Floating Around

There are some rumors floating around the net that effective May 2006 if you have an aftermarket exhaust you can be fined various amounts, made to remove it, blah, blah, blah...

I did a little digging to appease my curiosity. Here are two links that get to the facts and fallacies of the rumors, which is pretty much what I expected.

MRF Short Version:

EPA Long Version:

sounds like the rumours are essentially true, tho the layman's version didnt talk about repercusions, just said u couldnt modify your exhaust period. if/when they decide to enforce this, i imagine they will have to provide a certification process for aftermarket exhaust manufacturers as they can't very well shut down an entire industry like that. i'd guess it will just mean that aftermarket exhaust will have cats and maybe a touch more backpressure if the engine requires that to meet EPA standards.

I've gone over both with a fine tooth comb Freek and I cannot find anything pertaining to me, the owner of a pre-2006 bike with an aftermarket exhaust.

In fact I cannot find anything aluding to an owner replacing the exhaust on a 2006 and > bike either. Manufacturers and dealers, yes, but nothing about a private owner.

The rumors I have read state that if you have any aftermarket exhaust on any year sportbike you can be fined up to $10K and that is just b.s..according to what I read in the links.

I wouldn't put anything past the EPA/DMV Nazi's. They write they're own rules.

I've heard of whole bikes (NSR's/RGV's) being confiscated and crushed by the powers that be. It will boil down to how green your state or provence is??
