Police raid Yamaha's motorcycle headquarters!

Yamaha raid 'over chopper exports'
From correspondents in Tokyo
23jan06

JAPANESE police raided Yamaha Motor today, a company spokesman said, amid reports that the company was suspected of illegally exporting to China helicopters that could be used for military purposes.

Police raided the head office of the leading motorcycle and engine manufacturer in Iwata city, southwest of Tokyo, the spokesman said, without elaborating on the reasons behind the operation.

News reports today said that Yamaha Motor was suspected of illegally exporting unmanned, high-performance helicopters that are used to discharge agricultural chemicals but can be converted into military use.

Yamaha Motor was suspected of violating foreign trade laws stipulating that companies must have permission from the trade ministry for exports of such helicopters, the Asahi Shimbun and other newspapers said.
