Clutchless shifting
I have always gotten mixed opinions on this...clutchless shifting.
Anyone do it? For upshifting or downshifting?
Some things I've read say it is only ok to shift without the clutch after about third gear, is this true?
What are everyone's opinions? New or old motorcycles?

I do it all the time. never had any problems with it. to me blipping the throttle to unload the tranny to shift is not much different than pulling in the clutch. it just takes practice and good timing to do it smoothly. I very rarely use my clutch other than starting and stopping and have had no transmission problems in 22k miles on my '00 12r. well accept for an air shifter mishap that was cured with back-cutting.

I do it into 3rd and up, only for upshifting under full throttle. When I do it, I pull the clutch in maybe a half inch. Just a psychological thing for me...since pulling it that little doesn't really disengage it anyway.

I do it under full throttle in all the gears, been doing it for years and never had a tranny problem. Your basically just doing the same thing that all of the air and electric shifters do by killing engine power to unload the tranny which allows it to shift.

I never have done it, i just feel uncomfortable doing that. But then again im looking at it from a automotive techs point of view. i feel it can cause more damage in the long run than what its worth.

It's a must !!!
In DragRacing I foot shift and clutchless shift 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th then into 6th after I cross the finish line and coast...Clutchless shifting is better because you shift under less load when you get out of the throttle, shift, then back in throttle!!!...Also, it's good for a 1/10 in ET...

I virtually always shift without the clutch for 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6. Maybe half the time for 2-3. It's not that 1-2 can't be done but on the Twelve I don't.
This is with roll-off of throttle to unload.
I use the clutch for downshifts.
I've always done it this way (since about 1974) so both old and new bikes.
By no means do I consider it the slightest bit hard on the transmission. They're made for it.

I've always done it, it's the way I was taught to ride when I was a nipper and it's the only way to change up when pulling wheelies

On the track I pull it in just a little to unload the clutch, but only on up shifts. On down shifts I pull it in all the way. At home I pull it quite a lot!

I have a K&N quick shift with reverse pattern shifter, shift points can be set at any rev range with programming on the PC 111 works well on the track you can flat shift much quicker but takes a little getting use to.
On the road I rarely use the clutch on up or down shift unless in traffic.
