ROAD RACING - Camel Leaves Honda

Camel cigarettes will no longer sponsor Sito Pons' Honda team, a senior official of the brand's parent company said Sunday night.

Daniel Torras, Vice President, and General Manager of Sponsorship for JTI, Camel's parent company, said the breakup was over Max Biaggi. Specifically, JTI wanted to the Italian on any Camel-backed team, while Honda Racing Corporation thought differently.

"We were having a project with Honda that included Max and the agreement for that has not been fixed," Torras said. "And therefore we're moving into other options, other alternatives."

Torras said the other alternatives were in the MotoGP paddock.

"So it's not like...MoviStar," the other major sponsor Honda lost this year, "like they left, OK, we leave. No. We want to stay, and we will stay. Unless we don't reach agreement with others."

And Biaggi will be included in any option.

"It's obviously one of the options, but, again, we have to look at everything," he said.

Torras and two other JTI officials were seen entering the office trailer of Suzuki team manager Paul Denning, but he refused to comment on the meeting.

While his endless complaining and excuse-making, as well as childish and irresponsible behavior towards other riders don't endear Biaggi to me, and his repeated finishes well behind Hayden do have one wondering about him, still it might not be bad for Kawasaki to snag that Camel sponsorship and run a second team with Biaggi as the lead rider of that team.

Though if he were going to do all the bad-mouthing of his ride and excuse-making he's known for, it wouldn't be worth it.
