mechanical advise

For the last month or so my bike ('97 ZX6) has been having some difficulty starting. The neutral light will be on, it will roll back an forth like it is in neutral, but when I go to start it there is just a 'clunk' and it will not start. If I put it in gear, roll it ahead, take it out of gear again then it will usually start just fine. Last weekend, I had to do this several times and it did not want to go into or out of gear easily before it would finally start. The only other symptom I have is while running it occassionally is hard shifting from first to second, other than that it runs fine and shifts all other gears smoothly.

As riding season is over soon here I will be working on it over the winter. I have been thinking it is maybe a clutch problem but am wondering if anyone else has experienced this or might have some ideas what to look for before I start tearing it apart.

Any ideas are muchly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Check the springs that hold the shift drum rocker mech. Or the one that holds the locator to the shift drum cam.

See if the starter motor starts freely when it's unloaded. There could be a dead spot in the commutator or windings.
