My humble opinion

Are you fucking kidding me!!! The engine is from 1929. It still has push rods! Go test a KTM 950!!!

I have to admit, it was pretty fun! Make no mistake, it is no dual sport, but as so many (including Buell themselves) have pointed out, that is not their intent. It is a Sportbike with 6 inches of clearance underneath and longer suspension. I asked the guy about the suspension because I found that the front end dove pretty bad when braking hard (brakes work pretty good and come stock with braided lines)- something I would not want to see when routinely riding on the street. The Buell guy said the suspension on the bike I rode was stock set-up but is easily adjustable. Could you adjust it to perform like a street bike? I'm not 100% sure- it has the same suspension components as the Lightning, just longer travel, but I really don't know much about the black art of suspension adjustment- I guess you'd just have to try.

So would I buy a Ulysses?..... I would say that for myself, I would not buy one. I really really like Buells, I think they are fun and sexy and unique. Buell markets themselves as having unique things on their bikes- the engine, the frame (which incorporates gas inside of it and oil in swingarm), the brakes (perimeter-mounted rotor), the belt-drive, the short wheelbase, and the low-down muffler. Ah the muffler. I still maintain that this is a poor place for a muffler on a bike that you may take offroad. Even if it is just forest service roads. I can't help but think that if they could've let go of this one "design principle" of having the muffler down low in the name of mass centralization, that I might feel more comfortable with taking this "adventure touring" bike offroad. And if I'm not comfortable taking my premium-priced (MSRP is US$11,495) Ulysses off road, then I'm probably better off on a Lightning. The Lightning Long (XB12Ss) comes with the same front-end geometry and wheelbase as the Ulysses and is US$1000 cheaper.

Fish took a pic of me on the Ulysses, just for you Ozzy...

Yes but would you lay down your $$sweat and blood$$! That is the measurment of how a bike stands up to another. For me, I like lots about the Buell... but the engine...
Unless one has lots of spare $Dosh$ kicking arownd!

Gotta love those escorted rides that don't let you wick it up or actually test any aspect of the bikes performance.

Wait for the Cagiva & Husky offerings in this marketplace over the next 24 months as Proton challenges KTM and BMW head-to-head.

Yah, I hear you, but after seeing some of the fuking loser Harley-squids that came out to try, I understand why they don't want to let the general public do too much. As you know, the general public is comprised of quite a few idiots!! That said, they took us through a few twisty bits, although not full out on a highway or anything. Enough to check out how torquey the bikes are. For me, I've always gotten way more enjoyment out of acceleration than than top speed anyways. And lets face it, I'm way too chicken to really put somone else's unfamiliar bike "through its paces"....

Bottom line is that it was a fun afternoon and its a fun bike that I would not have otherwise had an opportunity to try. No, I'm not going to buy one for myself, but I have a greater apprecation of why people would. Maybe if I didn't know about some of the cool places to go that this bike couldn't take me, then maybe I might consider it. However, as it stands, I know that my priority is a way more nimble dirtbike than the KLR to get some of the places I would like to go.... but thats just me!!

...I remember my back-to-back ride a couple of years ago of the KTM950Adventure vs Jato's VStrom1000...they both felt like heavy "sportybikes" with lots of suspension travel...like my 320mm front-brake'd/Jardine exhausted KLR650...only waaaaaaaaaay faster....nothing to do with here or there, but your statement reminded me of that super-sexy KTM950

One of the great things about KTM's (or at least many of them) is the bodywork being so cheap.

I replaced everything with black on my orange KTM 525 supermoto and all that cost only a few hundred bucks. Most pieces are like $25 or $40.

(Why? Largely because I figured in orange every cop's first instinct would be that it was a dirtbike that did not belong on the street and would be interested in pulling me over, whereas in black, the eye takes it to be a streetbike. It also looks damn sharp in black, though personally I did like the orange as well.)

Of course the finish is not as good as we are used to for streetbikes. One of the pieces I even thought, geez, this must be used, even though it was in shrinkwrap. But then another piece that was definitely new also had similar marks thought not as bad, so I figured, Oh well.

But the Japanese manufacturers should seriously consider that technology for entry level streetbikes. Sure would beat shelling out thousands to replace bodywork from the drops inevitable for such bikes.

On the other hand, it was designed to take abuse as a bash plate. It's quite tough. Should protect your engine case.
